Job Description

What’s the role?

We are looking for a Staff Product Manager to lead the Ads Search Relevance team. We, at Etsy Ads, are committed to empowering our community of creative sellers to accelerate and sustain their growth objectives. We do this by facilitating the seamless discovery of our seller's collection of unique items by discerning buyers looking for something special for moments in life that deserve imagination forging meaningful human connections cultivating a trusted Etsy brand presence.

This is a full-time position reporting to the Group Product Manager and the base salary range will be 172,000 - 224,000 USD per year. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy.

This role requires your presence in Etsy’s Brooklyn office in an in-person or flex capacity. Candidates living within commutable distance of the Brooklyn Hub, may be the first to be considered.

What’s this team like at Etsy?

  • We have two squads focusing on paid search and paid recommendations relevance trying to answer the question - what ads do we show where, why and to whom?
  • The primary responsible for developing and refining machine learning algorithms within the search context to ensure that sellers' advertised products are shown to the most relevant and interested buyers, ultimately increasing the likelihood of conversions and sales thereby making ads accretive to the buyer experience.

What does the day-to-day look like?

Lead all aspects of product management for one of Etsy’s most impactful teams and identify which advertising problems we should be solving next with ML.

  • Product Strategy: Set the vision and strategy for your squad with your cross-functional partners integrating insights from internal user research and analysis as well as external competitive research and applied machine learning conferences / tech blogs to see where and how ML can meet our customer and business goals.
  • Product Execution: Work with engineering to execute on that strategy to build ML products that are cost effective and scalable. Define clear objectives and key results that can help the team ensure progress towards goals. Prioritize product roadmap through continuous iteration and experimentation.
  • Product Collaboration: Work effectively and efficiently with internal (engineering, analytics, research, finance) and external stakeholders across different initiatives / groups to identify dependencies, risks, facilitate knowledge sharing and help them understand the power of ML algorithms to address user needs.
  • Product Leadership: Showcase thought leadership by influencing Ads ML and broader Etsy Ads strategy to help evolve and scale the product ensuring that advertising on Etsy continues to be an excellent investment for our sellers.

Work on exciting and challenging problems such as:

  • How might we optimize the whole page to dynamically flex ad load based on a unified notion of ad quality across organic and ad listings?
  • How might we disambiguate and understand the buyer's query intent to appropriately align our ad relevance strategy?
  • How might we improve ads for international buyers/sellers enhancing our global reach?
  • How might we personalize ads while protecting user privacy?
  • How might we meaningfully use LLMs and generative AI techniques to cost-effectively optimize ads solving impactful user problems?

Qualifications

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

  • ML Product: 5+ years of PM experience. 3+ years of leading teams to build core machine learning products like search, recommendations or online marketplaces. Experience in ad tech space would be a plus.
  • Product Strategy: Ability to use insights and expertise from multiple sources (internal teams and xfn partners, external applied research conferences and tech blogs) to craft a coherent strategy and roadmap with a balanced portfolio of diverse short term and long term bets driving AI / ML led innovation while ensuring sustained business impact.
  • Product Execution: A consistent track record of building successful 0-to-1 ML products within an unknown problem space as well as optimizing mature products. Ability to de-risk big investments by breaking them down into smaller milestones with a clear definition of success. Confident in participating in highly technical conversations and reducing waste by thinking through build vs reuse decisions driving consensus when all parties don’t agree.
  • Product Collaboration: Comfortable forming relationships with groups across the company, from teams working on organic buyer experiences where we place ads to enabling ML infrastructure platform teams. Outstanding communicator who is able to optimally communicate (written and verbal) with diverse audiences personalizing the level of technical details as appropriate.
  • Product Leadership: Excellent coach and mentor of product managers.
