Hi, we’re Back Market.
We’re here to help make tech reliable, affordable, and better than new. We're a global marketplace for refurbished devices, helping lower our collective environmental impact by providing trustworthy, affordable tech with 92% less carbon emissions than new.
Yep, you read that right. Turns out refurbished tech is way better for the planet than new. In fact, With every device purchased on Back Market, our positive impact on the planet grows. From our Customer Care representatives to our software engineer, every individual at Back Market cuts the planet — and consumers — a break. Our mission is simple: to do more with what we already have.
Are you ready to join us?
The Product Team organisation at Back Market is a distributed team in New York, Europe and Tokyo, as well as fully remote, ensuring a richly diverse mindset in our approach and deliverables and a passion to build interfaces with the user as our focus.
We zoom out to see the bigger picture, but also understand that the devil is in the details. We are responsible for the user experience on Back Market, whether that be our customers or professional refurbishers. Through designing, prototyping, testing, and iterating, we evolve it in collaboration with different (and extraordinary) people.
We do this because we want to make the world a better place. Our credentials speak for themselves; we’re a certified B Corp, and we’ve already prevented 1 million tons of carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere. A lot of people talk about tech circularity - we’re making it reality. <3
About the job
- We’re looking for a Senior Product Designer to join us in making Back Market the most successful destination for buying refurbished products.
- You’ll collaborate with our Product Managers, User Researchers, and Content Designers to bring a plethora of concepts and product evolution, you’ll work on a daily basis with developers to validate the technical feasibility of your proposals and to ensure the fulfillment of your craft, and you’ll also be connected with other Back Markets functions (Marketing, Brand, Business etc.) to help articulate the needs and expectations of the customer and the business.
- As a senior-minded designer, you’ll autonomously own the design vision for our Japan Market, meaning creating new user journeys for Japanese citizens, taking into consideration their specific needs, which may vary from those in the EU or the US. You will also manage the relationships with product squads, business stakeholders, and other designers to deliver impactful results. You’re at the stage of your career where mentoring and coaching other designers comes naturally to you, and you are considering your growth path, either deepening your role as an individual contributor or taking the reins at line management.
YOUR MISSION (IF YOU ACCEPT IT): 🏅
- Being an equal partner with product managers, content designers, and engineers to build, maintain, and evolve Back Market
- Contributing to the discovery, roadmapping, advocating for the right approach, and delivering a best in class customer experience
- Collaborating with user researchers or making your own user research to bring clarity to ambiguous problems with relevant customer insights, and consulting quantitative and qualitative data to inform your design decisions
- Advocating for and facilitating design methods and tools to help your team deliver solutions that actually work for our customers and business
- Ensuring clarity and comprehension in your or your team’s proposed ideas and solutions from conception to delivery through proper documentation and tidy working practices
- Proactively advocating your impact and autonomously communicating progress, learnings, and goals to the company and beyond
YOU ARE IN THE RIGHT PLACE IF: ⭐
- You have at least 6-8 years of experience and 5 years in a similar role.
- Your native language is Japanese, and you are comfortable communicating professionally in English, as we are an international team.
- You have a good understanding of the Japanese market and, more specifically, ecommerce behaviours, ecommerce platforms, and online trends in Japan, including having a good understanding of how PayPay or Rakuten operate
- You have your ear to the ground regarding new tools and technologies that help our work become more effective and efficient. Oh, and by the way, we use Figma.
- You have a passion to help our team grow. You can contribute to inclusive design practices, are comfortable in voicing your opinion, and love mentoring and coaching others.
- You have an attention to detail regarding edge cases, hierarchy, and accessibility.
- You are inherently curious, you proactively explore different solutions, you are idealistic, but you challenge the status quo responsibility and can always find the middle ground.
- You think about interfaces not as static pixels, but as dynamic experiences, and can express yourself with motion, flows, and stories.
- Icing on the cake: Experience working with app engineers, knowledge of Apple and Android design specificities/guidelines.
