About Us:

Full Nelsen is a growing product design studio out of Boston, serving well-funded startups and challenger brands. We design native apps and responsive web apps across many business categories and different stage companies.

The Ideal Candidate is:

Somebody who is confident, comfortable with ambiguity, poorly written user stories and creative briefs. Somebody who can take direction, a sketch, a conversation, and come back in a few hours with some great ideas and low fidelity sketches of how to solve the design problem using understood patterns and components from the Apple HIG and Google Material guidelines.

Somebody who knows that creating intuitive design is often theft.

And great artists steal. Somebody who not only asks great questions, but also questions leadership when things seem off. The ideal candidate has read this far and knows to be considered for this role they must reply with the name of their favorite band, and the last show they binged in the subject line.

Qualifications (In oder of importance)

  • A great portfolio showing promise or mastery of design skills

  • Experience in product design, web design, or related field

  • Availability during the day when you're working (Slack and zoom)

  • Strong creative, design, and communication skills

  • Experience with working with development teams / engineers

  • Bachelor's degree? (I've seen incredible designers without one, the portfolio is 10x more important than your degree or bootcamp certificate)

What you’ll be doing right away:

  • Research client experiences and their competitors + related tangents, documenting it, drawing conclusions, and making recommendations

  • Brainstorm and whiteboarding / sketching in tandem with team members

  • Ideate stuff on your own - distill it, and present it to leads

  • Participating in client calls.

  • Production Product Design - Maintenance (10%)

  • This is where you take (depending on the client) where they are and show them (baby steps) where they could be - adding feature enhancements to their already existing “house”. Fixing stuff that’s “broken” and providing artifacts to the client that ensure their engineering teams get things to the consumer as designed. Sometimes you'll be jumping into an existing design system and doing feature work.

  • Product Design Caretaker / Success Lead (50%)

  • Using a foundation we've designed already, guiding and elaborating on it to ensure we can deliver value to our clients' users over time and be ready and willing to identify and completely pivot the whole business if needed.

  • Greenfield Product Designer (40%)

  • This is where you take a wishlist and a vision cooked up by some CEO and distill it into logical feature sets, MVPs, and testable prototypes against roadmaps. (At this stage we often have client-side partners that help co-create these requests. It’s our job to show how it all hangs together and how the foundation we provide can grow.)

This type of engagement often creates long term design needs and that's a good thing. (That’s exactly what we do. We build businesses through good design)

There is a full time job here for the right candidate. But we need to work together first in a freelance capacity. We are a camera ON culture.
