About Gem

Gem’s mission is to help companies hire great teams. Our talent engagement platform enables recruiting teams to build relationships that lead to diverse, high-quality talent pipelines, a great candidate experience, and predictable hiring at any scale. By creating a source of truth for all relationships with talent, Gem can automate personalized outreach, while also generating insights about the entire recruiting process.

Our customers are savvy recruiting teams from industry-leading companies — like Dropbox, Grammarly, Doordash, Cisco, McDonalds — who understand that getting the best talent in the market is key to maintaining their competitive advantage.

With funding from key investors such as, ICONIQ, Greylock, and Accel, Gem has recently been recognized with Unicorn status, with a $1.2B valuation — becoming one of the fastest-growing SaaS companies at its scale. And just as we strive to help our customers find great talent, we also invest in our own people and culture. We are proud of the culture we’ve built and have recently been recognized as:

  • The Breakout List, 2022
  • Certified as a Great Place to work, 2022
  • Y Combinator Top Companies, 2022
  • Fortune Best Workplaces in the Bay Area, 2022

The Team & The Role

You’ll be responsible for working closely with design and engineering to scale our customer-centric product development process. You’ll spend a significant amount of time in front of our most strategic customers, communicate your learnings to the rest of the team, reinforce product narrative across the company, and use the intuition you’ve developed from customer conversations to develop and prioritize Gem’s product roadmap.
We want you to focus on setting our most strategic product priorities instead of spending time writing specs or project managing every last feature that gets built — our experienced engineers love product development and you can lean on them to spec features in more detail while you spend time extracting customer insights, opportunity, strategy and narrative, and positioning. Internally, you’ll spend most of your time collaborating with the founders, and our engineering and design teams.

Responsibilities

  • You’ll spend a significant amount of time in customer conversations, and are uniquely positioned to distill and synthesize insights for the rest of eng, product and design, Gem’s founders, and the whole company
  • Project management is not our primary responsibility: we don’t run scrum teams, do backlog grooming, or talk about whether the acceptance criteria of a task have enumerated every possible edge case.
  • You’re responsible for conducting competitive research and engaging in pre-sales conversations to deeply understand market trends and develop conviction around future opportunities for Gem. External conversations are not just for scoping requirements for current projects, but also about getting far ahead of our roadmap to paint a picture of what the future holds and how we’ll get there.
  • You’ll guide product development through the complete development lifecycle, from broad-based needs discovery with customers and prospects through MVP launch, including running any beta programs, plus post-launch iteration and future roadmap prioritization
  • We have many internal stakeholders who are incredibly excited about everything eng, product, and design is building, so you’ll need to bring them along for the journey. You’ll understand the customer use cases, the ins-and-outs of our product functionality, and the market needs better than anyone, so you’ll need to be a broken record for all around you to ensure that we’re all talking about the product the right way and aligned on the value we’re providing to the market.
  • Because of our strong customer relationships, we work constantly with marketing to spotlight successful customers, develop case studies, and participate in external marketing engagements such as webinars, demo days, and ad hoc events.

Requirements

  • 3-5 years of experience in product management, preferably with at least some focus on B2B software for large enterprises (consumer experience is also nice to have!)
  • Proven track-record of shipping significant product areas, or overseeing multiple product areas, with direct impact to the business’ overall vision, strategy, and bottom line
  • Extensive experience interacting directly with a highly diverse set of customers — you’re personable, communicate well, understand our users as humans, and can build relationships and carry conversations that produce fruitful insights.
  • Strong communication and organization skills — you’re just as comfortable writing internal documentation as you are writing blog posts, launch comms, and scripts for your own speaking engagements
  • Enviable collaboration skills — you’re not only expert in synthesizing multiple viewpoints and put together solid execution plans with your design and engineering counterparts, but you’re also expert at socializing your thinking with diverse audiences within Gem and getting stakeholders on board
  • Eagerness to up-level yourself, the company, and our customers — you’re motivated by excellence and success
