The Petal Mission

Petal’s mission is to expand access to opportunity, by making responsible, modern financial services available to everyone. Founded in 2016, Petal provides technology-enabled credit cards to consumers who are historically underserved by mainstream providers.

Petal pioneered automated cash flow underwriting, a transformative new approach to assessing consumer creditworthiness with the potential to expand access to tens of millions of U.S. consumers without credit history, or for whom traditional credit scores do not tell the whole story. We're looking for people with kindness, positivity, and integrity to join our team. At Petal, we welcome diverse perspectives from people who think rigorously and aren't afraid to challenge assumptions.

The VP Product role

Product at Petal partners with the most senior leaders of the company to define, deliver, and innovate on digital and financial products that reimagine people’s relationship with their money.

The VP of Product leads the Product function to deliver extraordinary thought leadership and product management across every stage of the customer life cycle.  This individual plays a key role in Petal’s strategy and operations by owning our product roadmap and learning agenda; coaching and developing Product Directors, Product Managers (PMs), and Product Designers; and strengthening Petal’s cross-functional operating teams.  As a member of Petal’s leadership team, they represent the Product function while also contributing to and supporting Petal’s enterprise strategy and decision-making.

The ideal candidate has the skills to strengthen each tenet of Petal’s product function: deep customer insights; fluency in both financial and technical domains; sound process and resource management skills; and empathetic cross-functional influence.  They combine a depth of technical and financial expertise with a wide appetite for data-driven discovery that improves the bottom line.

This role will report into Petal’s CEO, and collaborate closely with functional leaders and teams across the company, including Risk, Engineering, Marketing, Compliance, and Business Operations.

Key responsibilities:

Product Strategy & Design

  • Define product strategies that expand access to responsible, modern financial services
  • Shepherd strategies through to implementation: research & analysis, product planning, discovery, development, execution
  • “Bring the customer into the room”: promote a deep understanding of Petal’s current and prospective members through market research, customer feedback, and performance data
  • Evaluate and prioritize opportunities to improve or expand Petal’s products; inspire others to contribute to Petal’s product vision
  • Participate in and help shape strategic planning activities as a member of Petal’s leadership team

Functional Leadership

  • Set and communicate the vision for the Product function, building buy-in from other Petal leaders to set the team and company up for success
  • Support Petal’s operating teams by collaborating with cross-functional Squad Leaders to clarify strategic direction and foster accountability
  • Grow your understanding of Petal’s business functions in order to evaluate competing interests and deliver on company OKRs
  • Develop scalable product development and planning processes that support Petal’s organizational strategy
  • Collaborate closely with Engineering leadership to ensure alignment and execution of technical product priorities
  • Proactively identify organizational needs and opportunities as team and business evolves

People Leadership

  • Foster a Product culture that promotes psychological safety, embraces continuous improvement, and understands the importance of rapid testing, learning, & iteration
  • Develop Product Managers (PMs) and Product Designers through coaching, feedback, and mentorship
  • Uphold Petal’s values in individual behaviors, product development, and people leadership - and identify opportunities to enhance those values over time

Characteristics of a successful candidate:

  • 8+ years experience in product management, with increasing experience directly managing other product professionals
  • Expertise in modern forms of product discovery and planning; at least 3 years focused on consumer financial products or services
  • Deep understanding of end-to-end technical product development, including either a development background yourself or extensive experience partnering on with development engineering teams
  • Ability to drive and guide user research, data-driven experimentation, sprints, and rapid iteration
  • Strong business acumen and ability to lead and engage with quantitative product P&L analysis
  • Proven leader of leaders, as well as teams; experience inspiring direct and indirect reports to deliver on product strategy and vision
  • Highly effective communicator: structured, clear, can translate complex concepts into straightforward ideas; demonstrates excellent written communication skills, including executive level presentations
  • Demonstrates curiosity and intellectual humility; great listener who’s unafraid to ask questions
  • Experience brokering decisions that manage competing business priorities; figures out whom to involve, when, and how
  • Comfort with ambiguity and ability to manage difficult situations (technical, interpersonal) with diplomacy and patience.
We are an equal opportunity employer, and we are committed to building a team culture that celebrates diversity and inclusion. We’re proud to be different, together.
