The role 👷

This is an exciting opportunity to help shape and drive the direction of our design system at FreeAgent.

Day-to-day, here’s what you'll do:

• You'll be embedded in a cross-functional Design System team and work closely with our Engineering and Product Design leads.
• You’ll create, develop and maintain our UI Kit, documentation, and style guide.
• You'll create standards and guidelines that help to unify and guide our design language.
• You’ll craft UI components and help to evolve our design system.
• You'll be an advocate for the system and proactively promote its benefits across the business.
• You’ll look at the bigger picture and consider the impact of both small and big changes to our components and patterns.
• You’ll drive accessibility and best practice ensuring we deliver an accessible experience.
• You'll promote collaboration and consistency and work with other product designers to solve problems and craft consistent experiences.
• You'll work with PMs, Engineers, and internal stakeholders to explore opportunities that lead to meaningful outcomes and the evolution of the Design System and FreeAgent products.
• You'll proactively dig into existing insights, behavioural data and work with our domain experts to make informed decisions.
• You'll be aware of business goals, risks, and engineering possibilities and work within constraints, knowing when to make trade-offs.
• You'll use your facilitation skills to bring people together to explore and ideate.
• You'll proactively communicate your ideas and present work to internal stakeholders for review.
• You'll be part of our growing design community, contributing to our culture and participating in meaningful design discussions, including crits, forums, and drop-ins.

You 🙌

This is a great role for you if:

• You have at least 3+ years of relevant experience
• You're familiar with fundamentals, components, and patterns
• You have experience working with a design system and have created new components and supporting documentation
• You have experience using the latest tools and software such as Sketch and Figma
• You have strong UI skills and a track record of designing user interfaces for complex applications.
• You pride yourself on your attention to detail.
• You understand the importance of seeing the bigger picture to create the best user experience possible.
• You're a natural collaborator and take an empathetic approach to your design work and your working relationships.
• You're naturally inclusive with regard to web standards, usability, and accessibility.
• You can demonstrate fundamental UX methods.
• You have a thorough knowledge of the English language, punctuation, grammar, and spelling.
You're articulate and can confidently present your design rationale

FreeAgent’s UI Designers form part of a wider design department that also includes Communications Designers and UX researchers. We work closely together, share work often, and collaborate across teams. As a product designer at FreeAgent, you’ll be expected to champion your work and explain and promote your ideas.

Annual salary £38,000 to £53,000 depending on experience.

Our work life 👩🏽‍💻

We believe in a strong work-life balance, we don’t work long hours (35 hour working week), and we have a fabulous Edinburgh HQ expertly designed for collaboration including high-quality A/V equipment to provide a great experience for distributed teams.

At FreeAgent, we support each other and operate a no-blame culture. Our mindset is: work hard, be nice to people, and the rest will sort itself out!

This is a permanent, full-time role (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm). This role will be based in our Edinburgh office for a minimum of 1 day per week, with the remainder of the week being either home or office based depending on individual preferences. Working from home is second nature to us as we have been championing remote working for 14 years.
