Staff Product Designer, Design Systems

We're looking for a Staff Product Designer to join our Design System team, innovating on technically savvy design tooling and languages to establish quality across our product.

As a product designer focused on design systems, you'll be developing design guidelines, components, documentation and tooling for our user base while also enforcing accessibility across Discord. You’ll use strong visual and interaction design skills to create world class foundations for our design team to use.

What you'll be doing

• Curate Discord’s product design language, finessing our library to create guidelines and standards for the UX/UI of our product.
• Creating and maintaining internal libraries and documentation around our design system, enforcing these principles when applicable across the larger product organization.
• Working with our engineering team to develop custom Figma and internal tooling.
• Contribute ideas and strategies along with engineering and the larger design org to further the future of design systems at Discord.
• Create high-quality mocks and interactive prototypes to demonstrate your work. Use research and data to inform your priorities and approach.
• Collaborate with designers and engineers across the company to identify needs, and communication problems to solve within the design system.
• Comfortable communicating and presenting to groups, sharing often for input and feedback across the design org.
• Passionate about innovating on current norms, not accepting the status quo as gospel but questioning better techniques or approaches.

What you should have

• Minimum of 4 years in experience design, with fluency across web, mobile and gestural interaction design.
• Multiple years of experience working with embedded design systems teams, building close relationships with Engineering and other partners to craft innovative design languages and tooling to up-level our company’s product quality.
• Sharp eye for detail. High level of craft and attention to detail, with exceptional visual and interaction finesse in all of your work. You leave no stone unturned in your deliverables.
• You think in systems as opposed to one-off approaches, and can easily identify improvements and opportunities from a high-level.
• Practice evaluating experiment data to help inform design iterations and shipping decisions.
• Expertise in digital accessibility, integrating WCAG and the latest research to ensure compliancy with current standards, requirements and guidelines.
• Proficient in creating Figma components, libraries and templates.
• Actively managing your own priorities and schedule, aligning your day-to-day work with expected deliverables and milestones.
• Comfort navigating and using GitHub repositories and Storybook libraries.

Bonus Points

• Fluency with creating and/or building Figma plugins
• Interface animation and prototyping know-how
• CSS, JavaScript, or React skills
