About the role

We’re looking for a Staff Product Designer specializing in design systems to support our Frontend and Mobile Platform teams. As the first dedicated design hire for this team, you’ll partner with product and engineering on a strategy to scale and overhaul our design system. You’ll play the leading role in shaping interfaces and interactions across a large surface area—three diverse business lines, and both mobile and web platforms. Working closely with cross-functional partners and other product designers, you’ll prioritize opportunities, build alignment, and oversee implementation. You’ll be a champion for craftsmanship and accessibility, empowering teams to achieve high-quality outcomes with greater efficiency.

This role is based out of our NYC office. Below we've reflected the base salary range we would offer for this position. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Betterment’s total compensation package for employees.

New York City: $160,000 - $180,000

This job may also be eligible for variable compensation in the form of a company incentive bonus. For jobs based out of our NYC HQ, we require in office attendance Tuesday through Thursday, weekly.

A day in the life

Lead initiatives to advance our cross-platform design system in partnership with product and engineering
Partner with product teams across Betterment to scale and improve our component library, crafting rich and flexible patterns to meet the diverse needs of our three lines of business
Increase accessibility compliance and help maintain standards across the organization
Expand and maintain design system documentation and component libraries in Figma
Establish a workflow and prioritization system for ongoing requests
Establish and maintain design principles and patterns to be used across all channels and experiences
Mentor product designers to help grow the team’s skills and provide regular feedback to ensure quality design work

What we’re looking for

6+ years of relevant experience working in product design (though your job title may look different)
Proven expertise building design systems, with a portfolio that showcases strong visual design skills and attention to detail
A collaborative mindset, with the ability to lead a cross-functional team towards a shared vision
Strong Figma proficiency
Holistic, cross-platform design experience (mobile and web)
Expertise in WCAG guidelines and experience maintaining accessibility compliance
Familiarity with code (CSS, Flutter, React, or Rails is a plus)

What happens next
