About Betterment

Betterment is a leading, technology-driven financial services company that offers investing and retirement solutions for retail investors and investment advisors as well as financial wellness solutions, including a 401(k) for small and medium-sized businesses. Our team is passionate about our mission: making people’s lives better. We’re headquartered in NYC, and offer hybrid NY-based (three days/ week in-office) and select, non-NY-based remote positions.

About the role

Betterment’s mission is to empower people to do what’s best for their money so that they can live better. As a Sr. Product Manager on our Applications Platform team, you’ll be responsible for partnering with engineering management to co-lead our mobile and frontend engineering platform teams on their vision and roadmaps as they strive to build the cross-cutting capabilities, infrastructure, tools, and platform frameworks that developers on product teams use to write, test, and deploy delightful experiences to Betterment’s customers. This is a unique opportunity to align the vision and executional details of our customer-facing teams’ engineering needs with our internal engineering organization’s roadmap.

You are an organized and detail-oriented product manager with a technical background and perspective. You are a natural collaborator and love being part of a cross-functional team. You relish rolling up your sleeves and explaining complex requirements to engineers, designers, and data analysts...and you also build strong relationships with subject-matter experts across the company. You are masterful in prioritizing effectively and making tradeoffs across a range of tasks and initiatives. You live for iteration and know that the job of building software is never done.

You rapidly build rapport with people and teams and are respected by peers as a strong and honest partner. You are passionate about building a customer-centric business that will impart lasting change to the financial services sector.

This role is based out of our NYC office. Below we've reflected the base salary range we would offer for this position. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Betterment’s total compensation package for employees.

  • New York City: $135,000 - $150,000

We offer a competitive equity package, health, dental and vision benefits, and a 401(k) offering with employer match as well as flexible PTO policy. This job is eligible for variable compensation in the form of a discretionary company incentive bonus.

A day in the life

  • Know how existing Betterment teams function and what their engineering areas of opportunity are
  • Translate those pain points and opportunities into product solutions that are valuable, usable, and feasible, partnering closely with your engineering and product peers
  • Focus on connecting Betterment’s Mobile Platform and Front End Platform team initiatives to the wider product, design, and engineering priorities
  • Establish and execute priorities flawlessly, working with engineering, product managers, and analytics to produce documentation and milestones that ensure solutions reach our internal teams as efficiently as possible
  • Develop the success metrics for your teams and the tracking plan to support it; understand and communicate how the work that you’re prioritizing is helping drive those metrics
  • Alongside your team, build a roadmap that increases platform stability, resiliency, performance, maintainability
  • Develop a deep level of user empathy through data, analysis, and internal user research
  • Have a direct impact on the financial success of American consumers every day

What we’re looking for

Product management experience in an engineering-centric technology role is essential to the success of this role.

  • Demonstrated success at communicating, prioritizing, and balancing needs cross-functionally
  • Obsessive attention to detail and strong organization skills in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong analytical abilities with a passion for data-inspired decision making
  • Ability to build strong relationships across functions within an organization
  • Creative problem solving skills that balance the regulatory realities and innovation
  • Ability to think abstractly about back-end builds and how that will translate into a customer and developer experience
  • Be able to construct narratives that help the organization see the long term vision of the platform; effectively translate technical concepts and initiatives to business stakeholders
  • A big plus: experience with high-consideration products and/or highly regulated industries
