Company Description

Since we first opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely – and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take a payment and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together. So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, run a busy kitchen, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. And across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow all in one place.

Today, we’re a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex commerce operations, sellers just starting out, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers scale, so do our solutions. We all grow together.

There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a business that is big, meaningful, and lasting. And we are helping sellers around the world do the same.

Job Description

Square was founded in 2009 and, since then, has been in constant evolution and growth. Square leaders are committed to letting those closest to our customers define the programs that will better serve their needs. During the last three years we have tripled in number of users we serve and that continues to grow. At this scale, we want to be more intentional in promoting a culture of bottom-up empowerment, diversity, collaboration, action, innovation, and accountability.

We are looking for a Service Designer with a "culture broker" soul to join Square's Payment Platform Design team and pioneer this practice within Square. Like everything else at Square, we start small, find where the value is, and then scale. If you feel compelled for this mission, a great team of amazing Design professionals is looking forward to welcoming you. We are committed to creating the environment to make you succeed in one of the most stimulating challenges a culture designer could think of.

As Service Designer focusing on culture and engagement, you will steward Square's bottom's up innovation culture by:

  • Design and pilot the events, processes assets, and tools that inspire understanding and adoption of Square's bottom's up collaborative innovation culture. For example, this might take the form of hack weeks, mingle weeks, speaker series and deep work weeks.

  • Establish the definition of success, assess and pivot when needed.

  • Steward the onboarding journey for new team members to have the opportunity to build empathy for our Sellers and understand and enrich Square's culture.

  • Partner with HR to promote diversity, equity and inclusion as important elements of our culture.

  • Communicate with the team about experiments, events, status and resources available to the team members.

  • Become a culture ambassador and build a network of advocates to compound your reach.

  • Participate in regular planning and reporting meetings with leadership.

Qualifications

  • 6+ years of relevant design experience or freelance work in service design for organizational culture.

  • Relevant portfolio of work experience showcasing your impact leading teams through cultural evolution.

  • Demonstrated visual story telling abilities

  • Proficiency using User Journey Mapping and Service Blueprint both to analyze gaps but also to create new ideas.

  • Experimental approach to work with progress rather than perfection mindset.

  • Ability to work autonomously.

  • Experience speaking in public and facilitating team dynamics both in person and remote setups.
