Company Description

Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together.

To solve this problem, we expanded into software and built integrated solutions to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.

Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.

Job Description

We’re looking for an experienced UX Researcher to join the Square Developers & Partners team.

We know we can only build remarkable products if we have empathy for our customers’ lives first and that’s where you’ll come in. You’ll help connect Square with our developer and partner customers we serve—and not to mention their customers: our sellers. You’ll learn from their unique stories and challenges to ensure our products are relevant, useful, delightful, and remarkable.

The surface area you’ll be working on covers everything from the beginning of our developer journey—our documentation—to the intersection in which our customers meet our sellers—the Square App Marketplace—not to mention all the spots in between. These solutions ultimately help keep our sellers participating in a thriving economy, and are helping to expand what’s possible in the Square ecosystem of products and services.

As a Senior Researcher at Square, you’ll lead research work on one of the core Square platform teams that helps developers and partners discover and build solutions for their businesses as well as for our wider seller audience. You’ll report to the Developers and Partners team Design Lead, and you’ll be a part of a community of researchers where you can grow your craft. This is a high-impact role and we’re looking for someone that is motivated by engaging with customers—learning their behaviors, motivations, and pain points.

You will:

  • Determine project scope and apply appropriate methodologies to manage a research "portfolio" of foundational and evaluative insights, with guidance from senior researchers.

  • Be the dedicated researcher for multiple squads and build relationships with cross-functional partners, such as product managers, designers, marketers, analysts and engineers.

  • Connect insights and approaches across multiple squads and data sources to encourage a holistic view that is biased towards action.

  • Shape User Research capabilities and processes, playing an important role in scaling methods, tools and activities that provide value.

  • Oversee the entire research process from brainstorming to insights.

  • Summarize and present relevant insights to a variety of partners.

  • Provide high-quality research outcomes.

Qualifications

You have:

  • 8+ years of experience conducting UX research in a professional environment.

  • Experience designing and leading generative and evaluative research using a range of techniques (e.g. remote and in-person interviews, usability testing, concept testing, workshops, journey mapping, surveys).

  • A track record of using research to influence decisions across the whole product development process and product roadmap through successful collaboration with product managers, design, engineers, data science, etc.

  • A collaborative mindset, with experience working across teams and forging strong partnerships.

  • A passion to build user-focused products that solve important problems.

  • A willingness to get hands-on and personally recruit participants.
