At Pocket, our mission is to enable people to consume stories worthy of their time and attention. Our apps and platform are essential ways that millions of people discover and consume content on the web.

Are you excited about the role of content to enrich users’ lives? Do you want to build software for a massive audience? We are looking for a Senior Technical Product Manager for our Backend team to help make this happen. Our Backend team builds the Pocket experience behind the scenes to provide our client engineers with the APIs and infrastructure they need.

The nature of the Pocket client apps requires deep connection to and reliance on these systems. With this role, we’re acknowledging these systems as products themselves, and the need for someone to manage them as such. We’re looking for someone who is comfortable with–and excited by–the idea that she will be building a new product practice for these systems and teams. That means shaping an approach to prioritization, new operational processes, and communication pathways connecting the platform and infrastructure world to the broader product org within Pocket and Mozilla.

What you’ll do

  • Partner primarily with, but not limited to, the Engineering Manager for the Backend teams to understand the teams’ needs, balance that with the needs of the client teams to prioritize work
  • Coordinate the various work streams between the backend teams and respective client teams with minimal support from program management
  • Facilitate the communication across the organization between the backend teams and the client product teams
  • Define, supervise, and analyze success metrics for launched products and their impact on the Pocket ecosystem and users, and feed takeaways back into the development process
  • Build, lead, and communicate roadmaps for the backend teams
  • Be a senior member of the product function but scrum with the backend teams
  • Partner with the PMs on the client teams to inform their plans and best understand their needs
  • Clearly communicate product plans, benefits, and results to a wide range of audiences, from internal teams to across Mozilla

What you already have

  • 5+ years of technical product management experience and a consistent track record of building systems that scale and meet the needs of the broader business
  • Deep familiarity with GraphQL APIs and microservice architecture
  • Experience running projects to migrate legacy systems to newer technologies and patterns
  • Experience managing APIs as products and internal tooling for our curators and support team
  • Experience developing documentation for systems
  • Experience leading agile environments
  • Familiarity with web and mobile app client code bases and how backends collaborate with them
  • Experience operating in a technical PM role in a consumer company
  • Familiarity with test and learn approaches to product development and how backend infrastructure teams play into that
  • Comfort driving projects from start-to-finish, with multiple partners from diverse subject areas
  • Experience working with a distributive and highly asynchronous team including folks in Australia and Poland

What’s the team like?

We’re a remote-first team. Video conferencing, Slack chats, and shared documents keep everyone in the loop and make sure no one feels isolated. We value transparency and collaboration from the CEO on down.

As a subsidiary of Mozilla, we have the nimbleness of a small team with the resources of a large company, which means each teammate has the opportunity to make a big impact. But we make sure our working hours are flexible—not just because we have team members in different time zones—but because we know you have a life outside the office, and we value that. You’re human, we’re human, and everyone at Pocket is treated with utmost respect.
