About Shopify

Opportunity is not evenly distributed. Shopify puts independence within reach for anyone with a dream to start a business. Since 2006, we’ve grown to over 10,000 employees and generated over $500 billion in sales for millions of merchants in 175 countries. Every 28 seconds, an entrepreneur on Shopify makes their first sale.

This is life-defining work that directly impacts people’s lives as much as it transforms your own. This is putting the power of the few in the hands of the many, is a future with more voices rather than fewer, and is creating more choices instead of an elite option.

About you

Moving at our pace brings a lot of change, complexity, and ambiguity—and a little bit of chaos. Shopifolk thrive on that and are comfortable being uncomfortable. That means Shopify is not the right place for everyone.

Before you apply, consider if you can:

  • Care deeply about what you do and about making commerce better for everyone
  • Excel by seeking professional and personal hypergrowth
  • Keep up with an unrelenting pace (the week, not the quarter)
  • Be resilient and resourceful in face of ambiguity and thrive on (rather than endure) change
  • Bring critical thought and opinion — and embrace differences and disagreement to get shit done and move forward

Job Description

We’re looking for a stellar Senior Staff Product Designer to lead design projects of significant scope, complexity, and ambiguity working across organizational and strategic boundaries.

You’ll join Shopify UX, where exceptional talent gathers to consistently deliver outstanding work in the quest to make commerce better for everyone. The devotion of our industry-leading team isn’t just a job; it's our unwavering passion. We sweat the details, constantly striving to deliver exceptional experiences. Empathy drives us, immersing ourselves in a deep understanding of the entrepreneurial experience, delivering solutions that make our entire ecosystem of users feel seen, celebrated, and inspired. Creative courage fuels our innovation, encouraging bold ideas and embracing experimentation. Open collaboration, feedback, and critique are valued as we push each other to continuously improve. We embrace cutting-edge tools and methods, exploring AI-based technologies; empowering our team to skill up in areas that increase their knowledge and business impact. With curiosity and innovation, we deliver extraordinary value and embrace new creative challenges. If you seek a team that shares your dedication and empowers you to do the best work of your life, you’ve found us at Shopify UX.

Note: All candidates must submit a portfolio of work or work samples to be considered for this role

Responsibilities:

  • Seek necessary resources, develop strategic plans, and make impactful decisions across products, projects, processes, and people, ensuring operational excellence and consistently raising UX and product quality to an advanced level.
  • Proactively identify and address high complexity, mission-critical problems, driving impactful solutions and serving as a trusted anchor for cross-functional teams, demonstrating advanced problem-solving skills and the ability to navigate complex challenges.
  • Collaborate with senior stakeholders to establish design direction for challenging and ambiguous problem areas, providing thought leadership and guidance to the Shopify UX community, while also influencing and aligning with broader organizational goals and strategies.
  • Independently drive all UX aspects of product outcomes, showcasing advanced leadership skills and the ability to take ownership of complex projects without the need for senior UX Lead supervision, while also mentoring and guiding mid-level and junior UXers.
  • Advise marketing, design system, and related teams to ensure a cohesive and exceptional user experience, leveraging broad influence and advanced expertise to shape and enhance the overall UX strategy, while also contributing to the advancement of design systems and best practices.
  • Demonstrate advanced operational skills, including the ability to streamline feedback loops and processes for efficient and inclusive collaboration, while cultivating positive and productive relationships with direct collaborators, stakeholders, and senior leadership, acting as a steward of UX and design quality at an elevated level.

Qualifications

  • You demonstrate an exceptional command of product strategy, business needs, domain expertise, and possess an extensive toolbox of UX tactics to achieve outstanding user-centered product outcomes. Your strategic thinking goes beyond individual projects, encompassing a deep understanding of the broader organizational goals and market landscape.
  • You have deep experience in driving and applying user-centered design processes, collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams including development, product management, data, and product research.
  • You navigate the complexity of interconnected platforms and features using systems thinking and first principles. Your ability to understand and design within complex ecosystems ensures a cohesive and seamless user experience across various touchpoints.
  • You possess a mastery of crafting beautiful designs and creating delightful, useful, and usable experiences. Your expertise spans visual design, interaction design, prototyping, and product design, showcasing an advanced level of skill and attention to detail.
  • You are an excellent communicator and storyteller; you have the ability to effectively convey the extent of a problem, build empathy for the end user, and support your design rationale. Your communication skills extend to influencing and aligning stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • You have a proven track record of successfully mentoring and guiding mid-level and junior UXers, empowering them to elevate their craft and expertise. Additionally, you have the ability to identify skill gaps and facilitate growth through mentorship or strategic recruitment, contributing to the overall growth and development of the UX team.
  • You use expertise in AI and ML to drive innovative product design
  • You are an expert in product design tools such as Figma, bonus if you have experience in using code to front end prototype
