As the Senior Staff Product Designer in the Checkout team you will lead design projects of significant scope, complexity and responsibility in creative vision, strategy and execution - meaning limitless opportunities for you to turn your ideas into reality. In this role, you will work collaboratively and build iteratively with a multidisciplinary team of developers, product managers, content designers, product researchers, and marketers. You’ll deliver world class experiences that make potentially confusing business tasks intuitive and manageable, and empower entrepreneurs worldwide to achieve independence.

In this role you will: 

• Work with cross-functional teams (developers, product managers, researchers, content strategists, fellow designers) to drive design vision and strategy that meets the needs of our users. You will help other disciplines understand the value design can bring to a project and ultimately build and ship the best products. 

• Improve the customer, merchant and partner experience. You’ll work on projects from start to finish, while participating in various UX initiatives including design sprints to define and explore merchant problems, content mapping, sketching, wireframing, low and high fidelity prototyping, and leading stakeholder reviews. 

• Applying strategic thinking to visualize ideas and concepts and communicate them effectively and compellingly for internal stakeholders, partners, users and the executive team.

• Being an active mentor and coach for the product design craft at Shopify, and helping to lead critiques, design reviews, and quarterly planning.

• Work with our Checkout Design System team in an effort to maintain a coherent look and feel across all Checkout Experiences, while challenging the system to evolve to meet the changing needs of commerce.

• Expert knowledge of the end to end iterative product design process, including developing and using personas, job stories, journey mapping, content modelling, wireframing and prototyping, user testing, and high fidelity visuals.

• Deep experience with driving and applying user-centered design processes while working with cross-functional teams including development, product management, and user research.

• Experience working with and updating design systems. 

• A deep empathy for the user.

• An ability to balance different user needs when designing solutions. Our team serves customers, merchants, and partners. 

• Experience designing within a complex system. 

• Excellent communication and storytelling skills; you have the ability to help your stakeholders understand the “why” behind your design rationale.
