About Shopify

Opportunity is not evenly distributed. Shopify puts independence within reach for anyone with a dream to start a business. Since 2006, we’ve grown to over 10,000 employees and generated over $500 billion in sales for millions of merchants in 175 countries. Every 28 seconds, an entrepreneur on Shopify makes their first sale.

This is life-defining work that directly impacts people’s lives as much as it transforms your own. This is putting the power of the few in the hands of the many, is a future with more voices rather than fewer, and is creating more choices instead of an elite option.

About you
Moving at our pace brings a lot of change, complexity, and ambiguity—and a little bit of chaos. Shopifolk thrive on that and are comfortable being uncomfortable. That means Shopify is not the right place for everyone.

Before you apply, consider if you can:

  • Care deeply about what you do and about making commerce better for everyone
  • Excel by seeking professional and personal hypergrowth
  • Keep up with an unrelenting pace (the week, not the quarter)
  • Be resilient and resourceful in face of ambiguity and thrive on (rather than endure) change
  • Bring critical thought and opinion — and embrace differences and disagreement to get shit done and move forward
  • Work digital-first for your daily work

Job Description

We are looking for a Technical Product Manager, to help define the strategy, drive requirements, and deliver products that power the Core Shopify platform. You will work closely with world-class Engineering teams, Product Managers, and UXers. In this opportunity, you will build the world's best Online Store, Checkout and Admin for merchants to set up and run their business.

As a Product Manager, you'll be at the heart of building something extraordinary - a product that fuels entrepreneurship, creates new value for the world, and facilitates personal growth. This is not a zero-sum game. You'll be leading the charge in a dynamic, fast-paced environment where shipping quickly and learning on the fly is the name of the game. We work on low process and high trust, so you need to be someone who can deliver impact and isn't afraid to get shit done.

This role isn't for everyone. It's not for those who prefer a prescriptive corporate structure or an in-person office environment. It's for those who thrive on change, can navigate through complex problems, and are comfortable with a bit of chaos. You'll need to be an independent thinker who is committed to developing your craft and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.

What you will do:

  • Build core products our merchants need to start, grow, and scale their business
  • Be a technically-oriented PM that can dive into the technical details relevant to the product and also provide product design/UX sense.
  • Communicate with development teams in technical details, understand the implications of certain choices, and make trade-offs in complexity, depth or even timelines
  • Collaborate with developers, designers, data scientists, and marketers. You will be a team player, coach, and referee all-in-one.
  • Prioritize and plan features based on company and stakeholder priorities and business values
  • Create and iterate upon the product roadmap and technical product requirements
  • Help build world-class API and UX experiences for entrepreneurs of all sizes.
  • Speak with merchants and partners frequently to translate their underlying needs into product plans.

Qualifications

  • A proven history of success building products in Product Manager roles at high-tech, high-growth SaaS software companies
  • Experience defining, building, and shipping complex, technical products at scale.
  • A genuine excitement for solving merchant problems and a strong sense of empathy for the merchant and their buyers
  • Experience facilitating technical discussions for products.
  • Sound technical knowledge. Familiarity with modern web development concepts.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work across multiple projects, align on goals, and output
  • Ability to manage complex stakeholder relationships inside and outside your team.
  • The ability to distill technical concepts to business users and vice versa
  • An entrepreneurial mindset - you must be comfortable rolling up your sleeves, thriving in ambiguity, and getting the work done

It'd be great if you also had:

  • Previous experience as a software developer or hands-on knowledge of how to code
  • Experience with APIs, SDKs, and/or building for developers or developer platforms.
  • Computer Science or other technical post-secondary education.
  • Coding experience or technical knowledge of coding languages.
  • Experience building and shipping products in the ecommerce space.
  • Founder and/or startup experience.
