Senior Product Manager, OSPO

About the team

GitHub has changed the way the world builds open source software. As the home for all developers, GitHub helps people build and use everything from insulin monitoring to the next hot Javascript framework to actual rocket science. Open source is critical digital infrastructure, and GitHub has a responsibility to make developers and companies successful when building in the open.

GitHub’s Open Source Program Office (OSPO) helps companies on GitHub ensure their developers can use, contribute to, and maintain open source software. OSPO also helps GitHub lead by example, enacting a strong culture of open source across the many projects actively maintained by GitHub.

We are growing the team to:

  • Build tools that reduce open source contribution friction; pilot testing them at GitHub and then scaling beyond GitHub
  • Guide teams through the process of open sourcing existing closed-source products
  • Support the community with best practices as they use GitHub to manage their own open source programs
  • Develop core insights around open source project health, and business value

About the role

You’ll drive the product strategy and execution for GitHub’s Open Source Program Office. This is an opportunity to shape the future of open source and influence the way companies depend on, interact with, and contribute to the world’s software supply chain.

You will:

  • Define the strategy for GitHub’s OSPO and identify the concrete steps to execute it.
  • Build a deep understanding of our users needs, behaviors, and motivations.
  • Collaborate with design and engineering to build compelling experiences, and work with privacy, community, data, marketing, operations, and business development to bring new products to market.
  • Use data to inform the team’s decisions around what we build and why.
  • Measure success and communicate progress across the organization.
  • Become an expert in the domain, market, trends, and history in order to continue GitHub’s role in the open source ecosystem.
  • Work with project stakeholders and marketing teams to shape launches for new customer value.

You may be a fit if:

  • You’re passionate about open source software and online communities.
  • You have significant experience shipping products users love.
  • You’re a strategic and analytical thinker, able to consider the long-term effects of your actions, and able to make decisions with rigor and nuance.
  • You’re an inspiring communicator, in writing and in person, whether you’re talking to our users, a business partner, or the CEO.
  • You’re skilled at translating customer feedback into actionable priorities.
  • You’re biased towards action, and you roll up your sleeves to get things done when the situation calls for it.
  • You’re comfortable with ambiguity and excel at finding a clear path forward from competing or conflicting inputs.
  • You’re comfortable developing product strategy in collaboration with senior stakeholders.

Bonus points if:

  • You work on or maintain open source software.
  • You’ve championed open source at a past company or employer.
