Company Description

Etsy is the global marketplace for unique and creative goods. We build, power, and evolve the tools and technologies that connect entrepreneurs with buyers around the world. Etsy, Inc.'s 'house of brands' portfolio has expanded to now include four individually distinct ecommerce brands -- Etsy, fashion resale marketplace Depop, musical instrument marketplace Reverb, and Brazil-based handmade goods marketplace Elo7. As an Etsy employee, you'll tackle unique problems alongside talented coworkers committed to Keeping Commerce Human. We're large enough that you'll focus on meaningful, complex challenges, but small enough that you can make a rewarding impact.

Job Description

We are looking for an experienced product manager to lead Knowledge Base Entity Understanding. This squad is laser-focused on using taxonomy, ontology, and machine learning to describe Etsy’s inventory and buyers

The Knowledge Base team is passionate about and dedicated to building an in-depth understanding of the unique world of Etsy. Our goal is to build, collect, and model product metadata to make sense of millions of unique items and users, enabling Etsy’s teams to craft relevant experiences. We are responsible for the end-to-end process of describing, collecting, enhancing and serving product and user structured data to our internal partner teams.

As the Senior PM of Entity Understanding you will be responsible for prioritizing domains for the taxonomy team to research and define, working with data scientists to develop models that help us better understand these domains, and leading the Knowledge Base human-in-the-loop program. You’ll work closely with engineers, data scientists, taxonomists and ontologists to define product requirements and realize the product roadmap. Do you find joy in solving extremely complex problems, such as how to define the entities within a completely unique and handmade marketplace? If so, this could be the perfect match!

This is a full-time position located (eventually) in Brooklyn, NY reporting to the Director of Product Management. We’re also open to remote hires within all U.S. states except Hawaii and Alaska. Etsy offers three different work modes to meet the variety of needs and preferences of our team: Flex mode for candidates who are comfortable traveling to an office location 2+ times per week, Remote mode, and Office-based mode. Learn more about our flexible work modes and vaccination policy here.

In this role you will:

  • Develop and lead a multi-year product strategy for Knowledge Base Entity Understanding that is clearly articulated, easily understood, and delivers significant value to our customers and business over time
  • Establish and maintain an impactful roadmap that empowers your squad to realize the product strategy and implement that strategy with clearly articulated and well measured goals
  • Work with taxonomists and ontologists to prioritize domains for Etsy to define, such as categories and attributes.
  • Work closely with data scientists to define product requirements and translate them into technical needs for the models they create.
  • Define methods and metrics for measuring the coverage and accuracy of the models, including leading a human-in-the-loop program for gathering feedback.
  • Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law.

Qualifications

Ideally you'll bring:

  • Experience as a product manager working in a data or technology-heavy role, including crafting vision and strategy.
  • A track record of defining product requirements for data scientists
  • The ability to understand the needs of internal customers (internal Etsy product managers, designers, engineers, and marketers) AND their customers (Etsy buyers and sellers), to spot common trends and shared needs
  • Experience “translating” between non-technical business partners such as taxonomists or product managers, and technical partners such as data scientists and engineers.
  • Experience working with taxonomies, ontologies, or knowledge graphs.
  • A trust in and commitment to Etsy’s vision, mission and values.
