What’s The Role?

We are looking for a Product Manager to own, drive, and grow our real-time and batch feature system.

As the Senior Product Manager - Feature Systems in the Machine Learning Infrastructure, Platforms, and Systems (MIPS) initiative you will be responsible for accelerating feature development, feature selection, and efficient usage during both training and inference. ML is growing rapidly at Etsy. Accelerating how ML practitioners find or build features that add value to a model is critical to quickly scaling the impact of ML. You will be the point person to collect, understand, and represent ML practitioners’ feature needs and challenges. Synthesizing these inputs with your domain expertise and understanding of Etsy’s strategic priorities, you’ll collaborate closely with engineers on your team(s) and partner teams to create solutions that meet these needs in the context of Etsy, our systems, and the ever evolving ML landscape. This is a full-time position reporting to the Group PM, MIPS and the base salary range will be 147,000 - 193,000 USD per year. For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States who are either remote, flex, or office-based. What’s this team like at Etsy?

This team will work closely with ML practitioners to continue to improve the ease and efficiency of feature creation and training data generation while ensuring that feature retrieval is fast and efficient to meet our most latency sensitive ML needs. With a foundation in place, our team is looking to extend, improve, and streamline the creation and consumption of features throughout the model development lifecycle.

What does the day-to-day look like?

• Craft a vision for ML feature creation & usage and define the strategy to achieve this vision.
• Listen to ML practitioners across Etsy to understand their needs, and collaborate with engineering and design counterparts to translate these requirements into an intuitive user experience.
• Stay current with industry trends and research to source novel solutions that address ML practitioners’ needs.
• Establish, structure, and define clear priorities with incremental tracks of work that focus the team’s execution to continuously deliver new value to users, while progressing towards the long term vision and managing risk.
• Define methods and metrics for quantifying the impact that improvements in feature development, selection, and usage have upon the business.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

• Experience as a Platform Product Manager working in a data or technology-heavy role, including crafting vision and strategy for platforms.
• A growth mindset - everyone collectively contributes their best to get the best possible results - no “I” in team.
• A track record building machine learning systems or platforms, with a deep understanding of the role ML has in a product and an organization.
• The ability to understand the concerns of internal ML users AND their customers (Etsy buyers and sellers), to spot common trends and shared needs.
• Experience participating in very technical conversations. The confidence to challenge ML engineers and data science peers to ensure technical decisions meet customer expectations.
• Adept communication strategies for generating enthusiasm, managing timelines & risks, evaluating trade-offs, and sharing success with senior leaders.
• Bonus: hands-on experience building ML models or systems in a production environment.
