Senior Product Manager, Data Storage

GitHub is changing the way the world builds software, and we want you to help build GitHub!

We are looking for a product manager for the Data Storage group. Data Storage is a key collection of technologies that power everything you see on GitHub. Our group is responsible for the services that store and serve SQL data, semi-structured and unstructured data, event and job queues, and more. We need a platform-oriented product manager to architect the future of data storage, powering the next decade of GitHub innovations.

In this role, you’ll work with a global team of mission-driven “Hubbers”. You’ll drive work in several technical areas, such as…

  • Operation and improvements to data infrastructure: message queue, job queue, object storage, SQL, and NoSQL.
  • Delivering data infrastructure so that downstream teams at GitHub have a “write once, run everywhere” experience across our environments.
  • Improvements to availability, performance, and stability of our data infrastructure.
  • Operability and observability for data infrastructure.
  • Advises partner teams on best practices and improvements to their use of data infrastructure features.

Working at GitHub, you’ll be challenged and rewarded with global impact. With over 65 million developers contributing on GitHub, there’s simply no other destination where your work can have a larger impact on the developer community.

We value collaboration, empathy, quality, positive impact and shipping. The most successful candidates will exhibit work that reflects these values. We want you to enable every team member to do their best work, and we'll partner to do the same for you. We expect you to have a strong technical background, excellent communication skills and a commitment to make everyone on your team feel included.

Your Impact

In this role, you’ll have tremendous opportunity to learn, collaborate and impact the habits of developers everywhere. As a Product Manager, you will:

  • Own the product strategy and execution roadmap for the area. You will be responsible for data storage, defining a strategy that aligns with customer needs and GitHub’s goals. You will translate that strategy into an execution plan and a roadmap to achieve GitHub’s goals. You’ll make tough prioritization decisions while helping the team think strategically about long-term opportunities while balancing short term objectives.
  • Represent the customer. You will be the champion and voice of customers in every conversation. While most of your direct customers are other engineering teams at GitHub, you will also need to understand their end customer’s needs to inform your direction.
  • Collaborate across teams. Coordination across multiple teams and domains at GitHub is absolutely vital to your success. You will play a critical role creating alignment between the infrastructure group and application teams.
  • Data-driven decision making. Analyze data for trends and potential pain points, and use this to prioritize and inform how to improve the product. Go back to the data when needed to answer questions.
  • Measure success. Own the measures used to define success for your area and align them to department and business objectives. You will define success metrics at the inception of an initiative and track their performance. You will make measures visible to all stakeholders and interpret them into actionable conclusions and new hypotheses to drive future work.
  • Evangelize your product area. You will spend time presenting on your product area and how it fits into broader market trends and GitHub’s strategy.

  • You have strong technical abilities and a track record of working through complex technical problems.
  • You possess strong communication skills, with clear verbal communication as well as explicit and mindful written communication skills. You are equally at ease speaking with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
