The Role Overview

As a Senior Product Manager across the Article Experience teams you will play a key role in collaborating with the Editorial team on using the latest article formats and technologies, including AI, to improve our storytelling.

This will include working on:

  • Experimenting, iterating and learning about exciting and innovative storytelling formats, including through the use of generative AI capabilities to transform content;
  • Creating tailored and immersive experiences that attract and retain our global, mobile-first audience across all platforms. Our team considers the whole experience, from ways for our journalists to uncover stories through examining data, to innovative formats to tell particular stories;
  • Collaborating with a wide range of teams within Product and Technology, particularly the Editorial Technology team which builds the tools used by journalists to tell their stories;
  • Investigating new channels and approaches to storytelling and story discovery enabled by new technologies;
  • Contributing to the development of innovative tools for our newsroom workflows, including those powered by AI (in keeping with our editorial AI principles).

This will involve a high degree of collaboration with Editorial colleagues and will require strong skills in strategic thinking, focus and prioritisation, and communication. The Senior Product Manager will also need to keep journalistic ethics and priorities in mind at all times, especially when approaching work using AI.

You’re excited and optimistic about what technology can achieve while acutely aware of its risks. You are capable of keeping ethics at the centre of your product development approach and leading the market in defining what good looks like.

You will bind people together with a clear vision across disciplines to super-charge our delivery and seek new opportunities for innovation. With such a large team with a wide scope you will line manage and develop another Product Manager (associate to mid level).

What are we looking for?

You will need to be an experienced Product Manager with a consistent track record of thriving in a content-led environment, ideally with experience of partnering with editorial.

You will have a strong experiment- based approach to delivery alongside proven experience of customer-centred design and data driven decision making.

Some specific things we will look for:

  • Strong leadership and communication skills
  • A track record of experimenting, building, iterating and growing successful products at scale in a content-led environment
  • Analysing both qualitative and quantitative data to support decision-making and measure success.
  • Focused on innovation with a strong desire to become immersed in how we showcase our world-leading journalism in new and exciting ways
  • Significant experience in balancing the needs of internal and external customers in the same product environment
  • Developed and proven influencing and negotiation skills with a strong ability to work collaboratively across the organisation at senior levels
  • Experience creating a vision and goals for a portfolio of outcomes and bringing people with you to deliver on it
  • A curious mind that keeps you learning about our customers and what they need, ensuring this is at the centre of how we measure outcomes and value
  • Experience building products in a news media environment
  • Proven knowledge of the latest developments in GenAI and LLM technologies
  • Experience with complex data analysis and interpretation

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a cross-functional team to develop products for our readers and newsroom through all stages – from idea to scale.
  • Partner with Editorial, Commercial, Marketing and other teams to align on shared objectives and create impactful solutions.
  • Manage the roadmap to balance innovation with practicality, ethics and safety of AI systems.
  • Integrate new products and features with existing systems and processes to create end-to-end user experience.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest trends in technology and the news industry to incorporate them effectively and ethically into the evolving product plans.
  • Create visibility of the team’s work and promote the merits of responsible AI and other technology adoption across the organisation.

FT Product Principles

  • Be distinct. On newsstands, the FT jumps out. Build bold products that stand out from the competition. Make the most of our reputation for innovation, insight and integrity.
  • Become indispensable. Our products are a platform for users’ success. Find out what they need and make that the focus of what you build.
  • Provably brilliant. Go beyond good ideas. Find which changes will have the biggest impact, whether they’re ambitious experiments or tiny tweaks. Measure them. Use what you learn to make them even better.
  • Products are partnerships. Embrace expertise from around the company and add it to your own; diverse perspectives lead to better products. Collaborate to solve
  • Build on every success (and failure). Needs and expectations change, so great products should evolve. Investigate, iterate, and repeat. Strive for simpler; prune or retire things when they’ve served their purpose.
