Over 100,000 businesses and millions of people use 1Password to protect their most important information, and we believe those people – and the companies they work for – shouldn’t have to choose between security and productivity. We see security as a human challenge, rather than a technological one. It’s hard work, but our mission has always been to ease the tension between security and convenience and help people navigate the digital world without fear or friction. Human-centric security is part of our DNA, but human-centricity is also the backbone of our culture. We encourage big ideas and new ways of working that help us to make the online world a safer place for everyone.

Content Design is a small (but growing!) tight-knit team within the design department and product organization. We help make 1Password easy to use and understand. We craft the content in 1Password products, including information architecture, microcopy, naming conventions and taxonomies to help users achieve their goals. Marketing and documentation content are handled by other teams at 1Password.

We’re looking for a Senior Content Designer who can work on building our design system and help mature our product content and design practices. You’ll help design the documentation site of our design system  and embed content design principles and practices into the components and guidance. You’ll also help champion content design, inclusivity and accessibility, finding opportunities to continuously improve our product and ways of working.

This role can be perfect for you if: you’re a self-directed content designer who’s able to make sense of complex digital products and programs. You have a masterful understanding of content design best practices and tie them into your rationale when presenting content. You’re skilled at defining information architecture and contributing to experience strategy. You consider the full user journey. You’re diplomatic and flexible, and you know when to stand up for what’s right — and how to do that to get the best results. Keep reading on to see what else we’re looking for below!

This is a Remote opportunity with Canada, the US, the UK, and the Netherlands.

What we're looking for:

  • A resume, cover letter and samples of past work. We want to see what’s important to you in your work and a bit of who you are.
  • Significant experience working in a product or experience-oriented content space, with a range of experience from strategies to microcopy and everywhere in between (specific job titles don’t matter to us). This is not a marketing role.
  • History of working closely with product or interaction designers and developers.
  • Experience with user research, whether it was collaborating with researchers or running your own studies.
  • Exceptional writing skills — you make every word count, prioritizing clarity while keeping a human voice. You love words, but you understand that content is much more than just copy.
  • Excellent strategic thinking — You see the big picture, but you also find satisfaction in making every detail right, taking time to analyze problems and separate symptoms from root causes.
  • Strong facilitation and consulting skills. You’re able to use your facilitation skills to foster partnership and gain alignment across collaborative design partners, stakeholders, and leadership.
  • Experience creating or regularly contributing to content standards or other governance deliverables.
  • Understanding of design systems, the potential role for content in them, and what makes a design system good.
  • Understanding of accessibility and inclusive design practices, especially related to content design.

Bonus points if you have:

  • Experience using and/or contributing to design systems for multi-platform products.
  • Experience in complex or tightly constrained industries or sectors (for example, security, finance or government).
  • Familiarity with Figma, our primary design tool.
  • Experience designing interface content for desktop and mobile platforms.
  • Knowledge of interaction design.
  • Experience working with globally distributed teams.

What you'll do:

  • Collaborate with product designers, developers, researchers and product managers to enable better content design in our product.
  • Work embedded on the design system team, identifying and capitalizing on every opportunity to build content design guidance and standards into the patterns, components and documentation.
  • Provide strategic UX advice on design patterns and components.
  • Define the information architecture of our design system documentation site, making it easy for designers and developers to use the system and make good decisions.
  • Collaborate with design system colleagues to write and edit design system documentation.
  • Facilitate workshops and presentations with colleagues and stakeholders to build collaborative alignment and create buy-in.
  • Consult with product designers and developers on product content we don’t have resources to embed content designers with.
  • Identify opportunities to improve design workflows and evaluate and iterate on design patterns.
  • Define and document content design standards and guidelines in collaboration with content designers.
  • Be a mentor and resource for other content designers.
  • Contribute to content design discussions, peer reviews, work processes, and our knowledge-sharing culture.
  • Model good content design and collaboration practices in every interaction you have.

What you can expect in the first month:

  • Review the tools and platforms that 1Password uses, and familiarize yourself with the style and format of our created content.
  • Get to know key people working on the design system and begin to audit existing design system content.
  • Start thinking about potential structures for the content and make a plan for defining the information architecture of the design system documentation.
  • Take part in regular calls to discuss workflows and reviews with the design system and content design teams.
  • Learn our brand guidelines and style guide.

What you can expect by month three:

  • Actively work on design system documentation and contributing to creation of design patterns and components.
  • Find opportunities to observe user research and make use of past research findings.
  • Speak with our customers and colleagues from other teams to understand more about our users.
  • Set up regular calls with teammates to discuss projects and update stakeholders.
  • Be a mentor to junior designers, offer constructive feedback to peers, and continue to help others to grow and develop alongside you.

What you can expect by month six:

  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement of design maturity, workflows and patterns.
  • Operate as a key part of the content design and design system teams, leading content design in your area and pushing the design forward to create a better product.
  • Act as a resource to others in the product organization and be an advocate for content design.
  • Help improve our designer to developer process.
  • Maintain and continuously improve content standards and design patterns.
