In Brief

Recidiviz product managers combine technology, strategy, communication, and coordination to develop tools that can safely and equitably reduce prison populations.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate would have experience developing, shipping, and supporting technical products, both in early-stage environments and at-scale. They would be comfortable going deep in technical discussions, and have either a technical background or extensive experience working closely with software engineers. They would be comfortable balancing urgency and empathy in their work with cross-functional team members, and would truly enjoy working complex problems into smaller, more manageable components. They would also be a strong written and verbal communicator, and be comfortable managing internal and external stakeholders. Lastly, the ideal candidate would be able to develop a strong vision for their product, while also practicing humility and a willingness to learn from both the criminal justice ecosystem and others' lived experiences.

The Role

Core responsibilities:

  • Define, manage, and evolve the product vision and go-to-market strategy
  • Coordinate internal functions (including engineering, design, data analysis, partnerships, and more) to ensure consistent, high-impact product delivery
  • Develop deep familiarity with the criminal justice system and its data
  • Manage internal and external stakeholders, including both agents of the justice system and justice-impacted individuals
  • Launch new products and features, evaluate them for ongoing impact (positive or negative), and iterate

Qualifications:

  • Strong familiarity and comfort with building new products from zero to one
  • Familiarity with other functional areas, such as Legal, Engineering, UX/UI, Sales, Customer Support, Finance and/or Marketing
  • Product experience building consumer or enterprise-facing platforms that include developer tools (APIs, SDKs, etc.)
  • Experience working with government end-users, or familiarity with the U.S. criminal justice system would be a plus

Note: This role is likely to include moderate domestic travel, including 1-3 trips per quarter.

About Recidiviz

Recidiviz's mission is to reduce incarceration safely, equitably and at-scale. We are a non-profit team of technologists working side by side with justice-impacted communities, practitioners, and ecosystem partners to build a better path forward. We partner with corrections agencies to shrink the system and reduce disparities by modernizing their use of data.

Organization History

  • Recidiviz was an all-volunteer effort until early 2019, when Clementine, Andrew, and Josh officially founded the organization. Since 2019, Recidiviz has built a team of software engineers, designers, product managers and domain experts, from companies like Google, Apple, and Dropbox.
  • Recidiviz was part of Y-Combinator’s 2019 class and has received support from respected philanthropists and foundations, including Arnold Ventures, Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Schmidt Futures, Ford Foundation, and the Mozilla Foundation.
  • Four years in, Recidiviz is working in 11 states – big and small, red and blue. These states are responsible for 1 in 4 people in prison in the US.
  • To-date, Recidiviz has helped remove 70,000 people from the criminal justice system (saving states nearly $1 billion along the way).
  • Over the next five years, Recidiviz is bringing its platform to national scale and aims to safely shrink the criminal justice system by 300,000 people.
  • In addition to partnering with state Departments of Corrections, Recidiviz collaborates with partners — from the Correctional Leaders Association to community-based organizations, to people directly impacted by the system — who guide our work and our strategy.

The Product Team

Although Recidiviz is a non-profit working in the criminal justice space, most of our team culture comes from tech - our executive director, head of product, and head of design come from Google, our CTO from engineering at Opower, and the rest of the team from a mix of Dropbox, Apple, and so on. Where we differ from mainline tech, it's typically intentional—such as being scrappier as a non-profit tech company, or by building a more diverse and inclusive team than is typical in tech.

In short, if you're a tech PM you'll likely feel right at home at Recidiviz.
