Company Description

Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together.

To solve this problem, we expanded into software and built integrated solutions to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.

Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.

Job Description

Square Staff represents a suite of labor management, payroll, and communications tools that enable sellers and their teams to thrive together. Now more than ever, as the economy reopens and employers seek to rehire, they need to search for ways to support and provide value for their staff and for their business. At Square Payroll, we help employers pay their teams and file their taxes, so they can spend more time focused on running their business. Behind the scenes, we have a team of tax experts who help ensure taxes are filed and paid, accurately and timely.

We are looking for a product manager who is excited about helping scale our taxes without compromising our quality and customer experience. As a Product Manager for Filings and Compliance, you will be responsible for ensuring that our tax system can scale and move quickly while ensuring we are compliant.

In this role, you will lead initiatives to scale systems that help us file and pay our employer's taxes, from the engineering architecture to integrate with over 300 state agencies to building self serve tools for our internal teams. Your work is deeply critical to ensuring our business scales to handle more complex and growing businesses. You will collaborate closely with our compliance teams to understand legal requirements and translate them into seller experiences. With design and data teams, you will help us identify and deliver the initiatives, processes, and products that ensure we provide a world-class tax experience.

You Will:

  • Lead product strategy for a complex and high-growth engineering space: Your north star is to achieve 100% of compliance, 100% of the time within Square Payroll.
  • Define a strategy to increase engineering velocity in adding new taxes
  • Define an architecture strategy to reduce the ongoing maintenance cost of our filings system through technical investments and operations tooling
  • Identify areas of opportunity and develop 12-18 month roadmaps
  • Thoughtfully define and communicate project goals, requirements, and constraints
  • Manage products with autonomy throughout their lifecycle, from ideation to planning, execution, and launch
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with almost every other function in Square: Engineering, Design, Data Science, Operations, Legal, Compliance, and Risk

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of product management responsibilities
  • Experience working in highly regulated spaces and partnering with compliance
  • Experience working with complex technical systems and managing external integrations
  • Collaborative approach: Track record of working with cross-functional teams
  • Entrepreneurial spirit: You're a self-starter and get things across the finish line
  • Analytical skills: You have a data-driven learning style and can be self-serviced
  • Excitement: You're passionate about Square's mission and new technology
