About Marshmallow

We started Marshmallow when we found out how unfair insurance prices are for people who move to the UK. All because the industry hasn’t given this huge cohort of people a second’s thought, and isn’t set up to price them properly.

We saw an opportunity to do things differently, so we made it our mission to back the ones who step outside the norm. Since we started, we’ve helped 100,000s of people get a fairer deal on their car insurance. Using technology, we serve people that are often overlooked by financial services companies, solving important problems for people who need it most.

We know there are millions of marginalised customers out there. And we know that they face unique problems that most companies aren’t even aware of. We believe that our future is helping these people by learning about their experiences, and building our company around their needs. And there are strong signs that there’s a need for a company like us. Earlier this year we hit profitability, which is a huge milestone, but the most exciting thing is that we’re only just getting started.

How we work

We’re really proud of the culture we’ve created. We push for progress every day, because we know that we’ll only hit big milestones by taking lots of smaller steps. We’re always open to helping our team mates, sharing our ideas, experience and knowledge to solve problems together. We take risks, think creatively and experiment relentlessly to meet our customer’s needs, and never pass blame when things go wrong. We encourage people at all levels to take ownership of their work, and to be bold in challenging how we do things. Everyone has a voice and the opportunity to make an impact.

And autonomy and ownership are only possible with clear direction. That’s why we collaborate to do in-depth planning twice a year, and make sure we leave with clear goals and objectives that flow from top to bottom. To make sure we’re as aligned as possible across functions, most of our work rolls up into four tribes; Acquisition, Retention, Claims and Pricing, Underwriting & Fraud. Each tribe has multiple teams embedded in it, working cross-functionally to do great work.

We’re so excited for all of the challenges up ahead, and we need more people to help us tackle them! If life at Marshmallow sounds like it could be for you, explore our culture handbook or read our blog to find out more.

The Mobile Team

At Marshmallow, the Mobile team is responsible for our highly rated iOS and Android apps. Our native apps are the primary way that our customers interact with Marshmallow, and they have over 90% adoption with our customer base.

Our vision is to build a totally self-serve insurance experience, so customers can do anything they need to in the app, and only need to speak to customer support because they want to, not because they have to. In an insurance context, that means things like adding new policies, identity verification, fraud controls, policy management, claims, and more! Where a customer does need support, we want that support experience to be world class - great FAQs, great live chat experience, seamless handovers between teams, etc. - and we want it to all be managed through our app. To achieve this vision, the mobile team delivers on its own backlog, as well as supporting other teams with their mobile related needs.

The team is made up of iOS engineers, Android engineers, backend engineers, and a product designer. It’s a highly creative and customer focussed team, with a culture of engineers actively reviewing customer feedback, and supporting with product decisions and direction.

What you’ll be doing

As the product manager of the Mobile team, you’ll lead the team towards the vision described above.

You’ll spend lots of time with customers, leading user research sessions with support from our Research team, to understand customer needs: what they love and what they find difficult or frustrating. You’ll be an evangelist for our customers, acting on their behalf. You’ll partner with various teams and leaders across Marshmallow to understand what they need from the app too.

You’ll build and manage a ruthlessly prioritised roadmap, and explain it to stakeholders through well written documents - primarily a biannual planning cycle with quarterly check-ins.

You’ll work with your talented team to deliver and execute: you’ll collaborate with them to define requirements and be part of a high velocity culture. You’ll work with data analysts to understand the impact of the changes you’re making on customer and business outcomes, and share those insights back to your team.

Who you are

  • Customer centric - You deeply care about delivering great customer outcomes. You have experience carrying out user research and talking to customers generally.

  • Curious - You don't stop asking questions until you truly understand a topic. Doing your own research does not scare you and you find new topics interesting.

  • Bold - You approach topics from first principles and are excited by big changes. You’ve achieved some big things in your career so far.

  • Data - You’re comfortable using spreadsheets, exploring data, and generating insights, in a self-serve way. It's a bonus if you’ve used tools like Looker or Tableau or know SQL.

  • Collaborative - You take a collaborative approach to reaching goals. You enjoy getting your team's input, and tailor your communication to technical and / or non-technical audiences

  • Strong communicator: You have experience presenting to senior stakeholders, and you write clear written documents. At Marshmallow we prefer documents to slides.

You probably have 2 or more years experience in a Product Management role. Native app or mobile experience is preferred but not required.

Our process

We break it up into 3 stages:

  • Initial call with Luke our Talent Acquisition Lead (45 mins)

  • An experience and behaviour interview where you will go into more detail about your recent work in more detail (1 hour)

  • A skill-based interview where you will be given a ‘product challenge’ in the interview and work with a couple of Marshmallow product managers to define a solution from first principles. (90 mins)

  • A culture interview with a senior member of the team to check that your work style fits our processes and values (1 hour)

  • We’ll let you know if you’re invited to an interview or not. But, as a small team with a lot of applications to consider, we can’t give personal feedback on each application.
