Product Designer, Storefront
About us
At Swell, you'll be joining a team of talented, resilient, and empathetic people based all over the globe. We are 100% remote and value the flexibility that this provides. Momentum and progress are important to us, so we encourage asynchronous work to further empower each team member to make the best use of their time. As we grow we are looking for individuals who are self-motivated, thrive in ambiguity, see challenges as opportunities, and aren't afraid to share their voices about how we can make ecommerce better for everyone.
Role Description
About you
As a Product Designer, Storefronts at Swell, you're eager to shape our design system and create usable and beautiful UI for our checkout and other product touchpoints. You're a motivated self-starter who is eager to join a product-led company with founders who understand the importance of design.
Joining an early-stage start-up is exciting to you since you are collaborative, a good communicator, resilient (especially when it means working towards tight deadlines), and a strong problem solver. You're thorough and demonstrate flexibility when it comes to sharing workloads and responsibilities. Previous colleagues and friends would describe you as a doer: someone proactive who isn't afraid of a challenge.
If this sounds like you, keep reading.
What you'll do
- Work directly with our Head of Product, Storefronts as well as with our co-founding team to shape the future of the core platform experience and visual language.
- Be transparent and honest as you share your opinion and expertise especially as it relates to solving problems.
- Create a theme, design, and visual editor for managing content models, fields, and publishing workflows.
- Design new user flows, UI, and design options for themes.
- Build a brand new design system for our visual editor dashboard and frontend in Figma.
- Design beautiful user experiences for customers get to checkout quickly.
- Design beautiful user experiences to showcase merchants' narratives and products.
- Work out how to represent different environments, markets, languages, and currency settings to admins in an intuitive way that avoids mistakes.
- Make developer tools and interactive documentation that impresses even the most design-indifferent backend engineer (because it's enjoyable to use, not just because it looks great).
- Interview users and collaborate with sales, marketing, and community to understand existing gaps in the product experience that can be filled with a better design or with reworked features.
- Collaborate on other design projects within the company.
What we're looking for
- You have designed polished interfaces and understand UX design practices. Our process starts with establishing user tasks and the data/copy needed to support them, and we usually write out most of the interface before drawing a single frame in Figma.
- 4+ years of experience in UX/UI design for responsive web applications, and ideally tablet/mobile apps.
- You value substance over style and can explain design decisions with solid rationale.
- You have a high degree of empathy and can anticipate how a system will be used and the potential downstream effects of large and small changes.
- You care about subtle details that most people may not notice.
- You have nightmares about working on files that don't use 8px grids.
- You have a genuine interest in typography, color theory, visual hierarchy, information architecture, and usability heuristics— at the bottom line you recognize that these are just so damn important.
- You have experience designing WCAG compliant, accessible interfaces.
- You're able to use data and user research to inform designs.
- You have a solid understanding of responsive design patterns and layout approaches.
- You can take technical, user, and business requirements, and end up with a solution that works for everyone—but always with the user first.
- You can immediately tell what needs working on without guidance; you see things that can be better and you make them so.
- This video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVhlJNJopOQ speaks to you on a deep level.
- A deep knowledge of Figma is essential—we're crazy about components.
- A clear communicator excited to work with a global cross-functional team to facilitate discussion and work asynchronously.
Bonus if you possess any of the following:
- You know HTML and CSS well enough to prototype your ideas or tweak an email template.
- You have experience working in ecommerce or a SaaS company before.
