We Are Real.

Real is a venture-backed mental health care company based in New York City. We’re a team of innovators, clinicians, and technologists on a mission to make caring for our mental health a priority. We're redesigning mental healthcare through a digital platform and in-person experience, integrating empathy, design, and progressive care to build the most elevated end-to-end mental healthcare experience, while also improving the quality of care itself. We’re not simply “normalizing” mental health care, we’re celebrating it.

We’re looking for a Product Designer.
You’ll work with the Director of Product Design to help set the foundation for Real’s Product Design team – establishing user experience principles, collaborative design process, and the design system at Real. You’ll also work closely with our Therapy, Content, Product, Brand, and Engineering teams to take features from ideation to implementation.

This role is for someone who values thinking deeply about the ‘Why’ when designing experiences. You’re confident in your rationale behind your design decisions and love an open, iterative design process. You always make sure you’re aligned on strategy and the problem you’re solving before you start thinking about the solution.

What we’re looking for:
We don't expect you to be an expert in all of these areas, but they should reflect a mix of what you excel at and where you're looking to grow.

  • A designer who’s process is oriented around strategy, data, and how to test ideas. You can assess what level of visual polish is necessary to move a project forward. You likely favor wireframing and focusing on the end-to-end user experience over elaborate visual designs. You can prototype and user test ideas to validate hypotheses.

  • An expert communicator who can clearly explain their thought process and ideas to those outside of the Product and Engineering teams.

  • A mental wellness enthusiast who wants to deeply understand psychoeducational concepts, methodologies, and treatment plans and translate them to a digital product (while thinking critically about the strengths and limitations of devices).

  • An open collaborator who is excited to facilitate design thinking for the whole team. You like to build buy-in for solutions vs. owning all product design decisions.

  • An ethical designer who considers the impact of their work on the world, and wants to push themselves to create more inclusive, empathetic, and responsible digital experiences.

  • A systems thinker who knows how to create building blocks, templates, and processes that allow for quick testing of ideas.

Requirements:

  • 4-6 years of experience in User Experience Design or Product Design

  • Experience designing consumer mobile apps

  • Experience working in a fast-paced, small team environment where you were responsible for managing your own deadlines, project updates, and deliverables

  • Ability to design features from ideation to implementation while working closely with Product Managers, Engineers, Business Stakeholders, and User Researchers

  • Experience working on and evolving a design system / component library

  • Clear examples of when you’ve used data, customer feedback, and conducted user testing to inform design decisions and iterations of a feature

  • Work in modern design tools and workflow software (We work in Figma, Jira, and Notion)

Please note:

  • Include your portfolio or 1-2 case studies of your work. Please include examples that focus on process / outcomes vs. visual designs. As long as the work is well organized, you’re welcome to submit whatever format works best for you (website, figma file, presentation, files organized in dropbox, etc)

  • This interview process will include multiple video meetings with our team, requiring up to 5-8 hours of your time in total. Expect at least 1 panel interview with up to 5 participants. Please let us know if you need any accommodations.

  • You will be asked to do a product thinking exercise—it will not be about mental wellness, and you will not be required to design. It will require up to 3 hours of your time, and you’ll present your exercise to a few members of our product and engineering team.

You are:

Passionate about mental wellness

  • You’re excited to improve mental healthcare and expand the number of people who have access to it.
  • You know the wellness market.
  • You care about the wellbeing of others.

Excited to build something from the ground up

  • You thrive in a fast-paced, scrappy start-up environment.
  • You’re not afraid to roll up your sleeves to get the job done.
  • You’re a self-starter; you don’t need instructions to get work done.

Data-driven

  • You pull insights from data, ensuring new ideas come from member experience and utilization
  • You seek data and know how to collect more of it when needed
  • You are excited to receive feedback and grow

A team player

  • You know it takes a village.

We’re committed to your health and happiness

(...which are synonymous, you know).

When deciding what benefits should look like at Real, we started by thinking long and hard about what employees need not only to work well, but to live well. Benefits impact how we act, rest, grieve, set boundaries, and take care of ourselves and others — and that means quality benefits are a fundamental part of not just a mentally well company, but a mentally well society. At Real, we want to offer our employees more than just "permission" to occasionally take a vacation or comp a therapy session. We want to give them the support and autonomy they need to feel well and maintain full lives outside of work.

Payout

  • Competitive salary, plus equity in an early-stage startup. Emphasis on “plus”—we won’t use equity to low-ball you.

Healthcare

  • 100% company-funded health, vision, and dental insurance. That means no monthly premiums coming out of your paycheck.
  • HSA/FSA plans
  • Free One Medical membership
  • Free Real membership
  • $1800 annual mental wellness stipend you can put toward therapy, psychiatry, and other mental wellness services
  • Short- and long-term disability coverage
  • Life insurance

Retirement

  • 401(k) — we don’t match yet, but you’ll thank us for the compound interest later.

Vacation

  • Unlimited PTO…that we actually encourage you to take, we promise.

Rest

  • Quarterly company-wide week off — because sometimes, unplugging is easiest when everyone else is offline, too.
  • Four-week paid sabbatical after five continuous years of work at Real.

Floating Holidays

  • Three floating holidays in addition to company-wide federal holidays so you can celebrate what’s important to you.

Grief Break

  • Real employees receive two weeks of paid time off in the event of losing a loved one. We know grief doesn’t have an end date, and we also know that “unlimited PTO” isn’t enough for most people to actually take ample time away from work. We want to support the process of grieving by naming this, and offering employees the opportunity to grieve without thinking of work.

Parenthood

  • Competitive paid parental leave and flexible return to work policy.

Autonomy

  • Flexible working environment — if you want to exercise at three PM, go for it.
  • Remote-inclusive team — whether you work from Colorado or NYC, you’re 100% part of the team.
  • Autonomous work culture. We don’t have to see a green dot on Slack to trust that you’re doing your job.

Growth at Work

  • We invest in your career. Our company's growing quickly, and we'll give you the opportunity to do the same. You'll have access to a number of professional development opportunities so that you can keep up with the company's evolving needs and grow your career along the way.
