The role:

  • The Product Designer will own the design experience of the section within Newsela that houses the written, video, and interactive content, for teachers and students.
  • You will understand and articulate user and business problems, and propose a range of thoughtful and creative design solutions. Additionally, you will execute designs based on strong understanding of current UX/UI best practices and expertise using industry standard design tools/programs, always ensuring accessibility considerations are addressed.
  • Reporting to the Director of Visual Design, you will partner closely with Product, Engineering, UX Research, UX Writing, Data, Content, and Marketing to align on problems, define solutions, and ensure feasibility, by following our user-centric product design vision and culture; owning the design execution, building trust, and having  a “learn continuously” mindset.

Why you’ll love this role:

  • As a member of our growing product design team, you will have the opportunity to join a high functioning, collaborative group that is key in shaping our features and products.
  • As an embedded Product Designer on a product team, that’s part of a Product Growth Led organization, you will also gain exposure and participate in our full product process—from discovery through delivery—leveraging your skills to improve the product at every stage.
  • You’ll also have the opportunity to have a great impact on the company Big Rocks for this year and the next 5 years.
  • You will have a direct impact on how teachers and students consume and interact with the content, by creating elegant and easy solutions that improves the core experience of the product, which will ultimately scale Newsela’s ability to bring engaging, culturally responsive learning content to K-12 classrooms nationwide.

Why you’re a great fit:

  • You have 3+ years of experience as a Product Designer working with complex user and business problems, understands feature requirements, and tech constraints, to create simple, engaging and scalable experiences.
  • You have demonstrated success in approaching patterns holistically and think about the larger experience. You have a strong understanding of web and mobile-web platform technologies, and you keep in mind accessibility. You know when to use broad stroke sketches, use a design system, or when to apply pixel-perfect attention to detail.
  • You are able to leverage your knowledge of user pain points and goals, informed by research (quantitative and qualitative) to inform your design direction to effectively document your decision and specifications. Similarly you can provide and receive actionable feedback from a cross-functional team.
  • You understand the value of working cross functionally and have a collaborative mindset. You partner with Product Management, Engineering, UX Research, Data, Content, and Marketing to define problems, align on solutions, and ensure feasibility; through workshops to coordinate on process to soliciting feedback at all stages of the product life cycle.
  • While not required, knowledge of Motion Design or animation done using Adobe After Effects would be a plus.
  • Any other must-have skills
    • Experience working in Figma
    • Understand the value, and has worked with a Design System or has collaborated to one
    • Knowledge of Visual Design and attention to detail when it comes to pixel perfect design, and documentation for hand-off to Engineers.

$105,000 - $134,000. Total compensation for this role also includes incentive stock options and benefits. This compensation range may be adjusted based on actual experience.
