FreeAgent 🚀

FreeAgent aims to remove the stress and pain of dealing with business finances. From the very beginning in 2007, our aim was to create a product that would make an impact and improve the lives of micro-businesses in the UK. Now FreeAgent is one of the UK's most popular online accounting software providers, with over 125,000 customers.

Not to blow our own horn … but Accounting WEB even named FreeAgent the top bookkeeping product of 2020 and 2021. And in 2021 our mobile app was also voted ‘Client App of the Year’ by ICB LUCA. The list could go on!

It’s not just our customers who love us, our employees do too ⭐

We believe in the power of a collaborative, high-performing, and diverse team. We’d love you to join us on our journey.

The role 👷

Our Banking Integrations team’s mission is to bring together business accounting and business banking as one integrated experience.

We’re looking for a Product Designer who can collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, and work across teams to create a unified customer journey. The role is perfect for someone who cares deeply about the end-to-end user experience and can look at the big picture as well as sweat the details.

As well as working on the FreeAgent product, this is an exciting opportunity to work with external design teams, providing domain expertise and guidance. As a result, communication and collaboration are key to this role.

Day-to-day, here’s what you'll do:

  • You'll be embedded in a cross-functional team and work closely with Product Managers and Engineers to explore opportunities that lead to meaningful outcomes.
  • You’ll collaborate closely with both internal and external stakeholders, providing direction and guidance where required.
  • You'll work in close collaboration with our Research team and external design teams to fully understand our users and their needs.
  • You'll proactively dig into existing insights, behavioural data, and work with our domain experts to help drive the FreeAgent product forward.
  • You'll collaborate with other product designers to solve problems and craft consistent experiences.
  • You'll be knowledgeable about our business goals, risks, and engineering possibilities and work within constraints, knowing when to make trade-offs.
  • You'll use your facilitation skills to bring people together to explore and ideate.
  • You'll create rapid lo-fi prototypes to communicate user flows and features, and hi-fi prototypes to test workflows with stakeholders and FreeAgent users.
  • You’ll work with external stakeholders to map customer journeys whilst also providing design direction and domain expertise.
  • You'll deliver high-quality, consistent designs and documentation for our engineering team and design system team.
  • You'll be part of our growing design community, participating in meaningful design discussions, including crits, forums, and drop-ins.
  • You’ll encourage the growth and development of colleagues through advice sessions and sharing learning materials.
  • You’ll work with peers and leadership to make the best space possible for design to happen and ensure teams are set up for success.

You 🙌

This is a great role for you if:

  • You have at least 4+ years experience.
  • You have a track record of designing user interfaces for complex applications, translating user requirements into elegant, usable solutions.
  • You understand the importance of seeing the bigger picture to create the best user experience possible.
  • You take an empathetic approach to your design work and your working relationships.
  • You have experience giving design direction and holding members of the team to a high standard while motivating them to do their best work.
  • You lead by example with a team sport mindset and a broad perspective, practising co-design, and actively promote knowledge sharing.
  • You share ideas early and at key stages, and you actively seek out and encourage a range of feedback.
  • You’re confident at filtering and distilling opinions and feedback into meaningful responses.
  • You're naturally inclusive with regard to web standards, usability, and accessibility.
  • You can demonstrate fundamental UX methods.
  • You're an excellent facilitator, communicator, and storyteller.
  • You’re able to respectfully navigate challenging situations alongside your team.
  • You're experienced working with a team end to end, to deliver features and improvements.
  • You’re comfortable both executing designs and providing hands-off direction.

FreeAgent’s Product Designers form part of a wider design department that also includes Communications Designers and User Researchers. We work closely together, share work often, and collaborate across teams. As a product designer at FreeAgent you’ll be expected to champion your work and explain and promote your ideas.

Front and centre to our work, we strive tirelessly to create the very best experience for our customers. We'll encourage you to be brave, take risks and fail without fear, because we believe in the value of the journey and in learning by making. It’s fast-paced at times, but it’s always fun!

Perks 🎁

Depending on experience, starting salary for the role is £38,000 - £53,000 (mid-level) and £53,000 - £60,000 (senior level, with room to grow to £68,000 within the senior band).

We pride ourselves on creating a fantastic place to work, including (but not limited to!) the following:

  • 33 days holiday (and an extra day for each year you're with us)
  • Flexible/hybrid working
  • Private health care
  • Life assurance
  • 5% matched pension contributions
  • Summer 4 day weeks (giving you 7 additional days off!)
  • Buy-as-you-earn share schemes
  • Sabbatical leave (unpaid)
  • Cycle to work scheme

At FreeAgent, we support each other and operate a no-blame culture. Our mindset is: work hard, be nice to people, and the rest will sort itself out!

This is a permanent, full-time role (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm). This role will be based in our Edinburgh office for a minimum of 1 day per week, with the remainder of the week being either home or office based depending on individual preferences. Working from home is second nature to us as we have been championing remote working for 14 years.
