About Marshmallow

We started Marshmallow when we found out how unfair insurance prices are for people who move to the UK. All because the industry hasn’t given this huge cohort of people a second’s thought, and isn’t set up to price them properly.

We saw an opportunity to do things differently, so we made it our mission to back the ones who step outside the norm. Since we started, we’ve helped 100,000s of people get a fairer deal on their car insurance. Using technology, we serve people that are often overlooked by financial services companies, solving important problems for people who need it most.

We know there are millions of marginalised customers out there. And we know that they face unique problems that most companies aren’t even aware of. We believe that our future is helping these people by learning about their experiences, and building our company around their needs. And there are strong signs that there’s a need for a company like us. Earlier this year we hit profitability, which is a huge milestone, but the most exciting thing is that we’re only just getting started.

How we work

We’re really proud of the culture we’ve created. We push for progress every day, because we know that we’ll only hit big milestones by taking lots of smaller steps. We’re always open to helping our team mates, sharing our ideas, experience and knowledge to solve problems together. We take risks, think creatively and experiment relentlessly to meet our customer’s needs, and never pass blame when things go wrong. We encourage people at all levels to take ownership of their work, and to be bold in challenging how we do things. Everyone has a voice and the opportunity to make an impact.

And autonomy and ownership are only possible with clear direction. That’s why we collaborate to do in-depth planning twice a year, and make sure we leave with clear goals and objectives that flow from top to bottom. To make sure we’re as aligned as possible across functions, most of our work rolls up into four tribes; Acquisition, Retention, Claims and Pricing, Underwriting & Fraud. Each tribe has multiple teams embedded in it, working cross-functionally to do great work.

We’re so excited for all of the challenges up ahead, and we need more people to help us tackle them! If life at Marshmallow sounds like it could be for you, explore our culture handbook or read our blog to find out more.

Product Designer

We're looking for a Product Designer to improve outcomes for our customers by enhancing our in-app experience. This role is to support our newly built app team and Voice of Customer Forum both with explicit goals of improving NPS.

At Marshmallow, we work to revolutionise the insurance industry – it's not just about rethinking how people buy cover or make a claim. We want to reduce the distress caused by accidents and personal disasters - and one day remove it altogether! So, where do you come into that?

As a team of designers, writers and researchers, we identify the needs of our customers to make sure we're prioritising and building the right thing that supports people in their hour of need, and makes them safer in the first place. We work collaboratively across the company, breaking silos to create a seamless experience.

Whether it’s designing the app onboarding experience, improving the self serve functionality or working cross-functionality to identify new opportunities to go after, we're looking for a Product Designer to make interacting with insurance as easy as possible. You will work collaboratively design process through discovery, implementation and validation whilst embedded in one of our cross-functional squads.

What you’ll be doing

  • Working end to end across an experience. You’ll work with multiple teams and look across the whole experience when designing a single interaction to help consistency and reduce design debt.

  • Understanding the needs of our customers. You’ll deeply understand customer needs and will strive to understand the what, why, and how of the problems you’re solving. You’ll use an evidence-based approach to product development while balancing business needs.

  • Implementing high-quality, clear designs. Using design principles and best practices you’ll make rationale that helps our customers when they interact with Marshmallow.

  • Validating product and design decisions. Working with data and research you'll ensure your work is validated to reduce backtracking and enable the team to move quickly. You'll work with measures in place to make sure we're moving the needle on business and customers needs.

  • Collaborating to drive the product vision forward with business stakeholders, product managers, designers, and engineers to create alignment across teams and manage expectations.

  • Contributing to the development of product design across the organisation by collaboration with others in pairing, workshops, training sessions and reviews.

You should apply if

  • You are customer-obsessed. You are passionate about gaining a deep understanding of our customer's needs and behaviours. You can easily communicate them to the wider business.

  • You can comfortably prioritise work using an evidence-based approach to product development. You balance business and users' needs, focusing on work that will bring the biggest benefits to the team.

  • You have an experimental mindset. You know that small changes can end in big results. You are comfortable at running quick experiments enabling your team to learn and iterate effectively.

  • You are a UI wizard. The projects you’ll be working on are all app based - having a good eye for details and an understanding of system guidelines is key. p

This isn't for you if

  • You like working on discrete problems. The projects at Marshmallow often cross over into different platforms and teams. You'll need to be comfortable at working collaboratively and drawing alignment in both your team and across teams.

  • You need top-down direction. We work autonomously within our squads to align and drive forward the direction of our products. You will need to be able to hold your own as the sole designer within your squad.

  • You stop once your work has been released. We're looking for someone who wants to release, track and continuously improve their work, learning from our customers how to make it better.
