Product Design, Mechanical Engineer

About the role:

We’re looking for a Hardware Product Design Mechanical Engineer to join our team.  In this role you will be responsible for the industrial design, architecture, and engineering of one or more Samsara products from initial concept through to mass production. You will motivate your product design process using both data-driven insights gleaned from our telemetry data cloud, and deep hands-on understanding of our customers earned crawling around their sites and equipment alongside them.   

In bringing products to market you will work collaboratively with Product Management, EE, FW, EPM, and Hardware leadership to make excellent tradeoffs and decisions that balance functionality, cost, installation, usability, and aesthetics.  Samsara’s Hardware PD teams are supported by and coordinate closely with Samsara’s Operations and Supply Chain teams, outside laboratories, JDM design resources, and a growing supply base in Asia.  Together you will bring exceptional products to market on time and on budget, and ensure that Samsara leads the industry in our product design.  

This role will be hybrid with flexible Monday/Friday work and onsite days Tuesday through Thursday in our San Francisco office each week.

In this role, you will:

• Ship successful products.
• Research: stay abreast of the latest trends in related products, fabrication techniques, vendors, quality assurance, process, etc.
• Work on Industrial design and Architecture: Evaluate system feature tradeoffs and create the system specifications for development with product management and cross-functional engineering teams. 
• Support the development process from industrial design studies and prototyping through field validation according to performance, cost and schedule goals.
• Support the development process regarding reliability testing and product field performance.
• Champion, role model, and embed Samsara’s cultural principles (Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, Win as a Team) as we scale globally and across new offices.

Minimum requirements for the role:

• 5+ years of experience shipping high volume hardware programs at scale with partners overseas.
• Systems design expertise including thermals, rugged enclosures, antennas, electrical engineering, batteries, etc.
• Proven record navigating tradeoffs between design, manufacturability, schedule, and cost across engineering disciplines.
• Worked on a wide variety of systems for different use cases and environments including automotive, indoor and outdoor industrial areas, and whatever we may do next.
• BS or MS degree in mechanical engineering.
• Ability to travel up to 10% to Asia and to customer sites when necessary.

An ideal candidate also has:

• 10 years of experience shipping high volume hardware programs at scale.
• Experience shipping hardware programs with JDM partners.
• Experience with design for thermally challenged products.
• Experience with ruggedized design including IP sealing, vibration, and harsh environments.
• Full system design experience.
