Job Overview:

The Coursera Design & Research team is seeking a Product Design Manager with a specialization in visual UI & motion to build and lead a team of UI designers responsible for conceptualizing world class visual & interactive experiences that elevate our product’s look and feel, bring delight to everyday interactions, differentiate our product and advance a cohesive vision for the future. 

You will work closely with a team of product, brand and design-system designers  across our organization to develop new product features, evolve design patterns and bring our brand to life through the in-product experience across web and mobile.

This role reports to the Senior Director of Product Design, and will help build and manage a team of 3-4 UI designers that will be deployed on a project basis to augment the efforts of pod-based product designers across our platform with a unified design agenda.

The ideal candidate should be a student of best-in class UI & interactive patterns, hold a high bar for visual design excellence, possess a deep understanding of how to work within and evolve a design system, be well versed in accessibility & mobile design, and have demonstrated experience driving meaningful change to the in-product look and feel.

Responsibilities

  • Attract and hire top UI talent and develop them across their career journey 
  • Coach a team of UI designers to develop their craft, execution abilities, and subject matter expertise while fostering a healthy, remote-first, inclusive culture
  • Shape a design vision for the platform expression system with visual & interaction design, including its development, rollout and ongoing evolution.  
  • Present ideas in a compelling way to inspire teams, influence stakeholders, and secure resources 
  • Prioritize efforts for maxim impact and develop roadmaps that iteratively drive progress toward a vision
  • Collaborate with pod-level UX designers, engineers, and product managers throughout the design and development lifecycle informing the creation of new products and experiences across the Coursera platform with a visual design lens. 
  • Guide designers in conceptualizing, designing and developing UI / UX experiences through to delivery including auditing live product to ensure implementation excellence.
  • Where necessary, lean-in to drive design work alongside your team, modeling excellence and setting the pace.
  • Stay updated with design trends to guide teams toward the cutting edge. 
  • Partner with the Coursera Design System team to bring a scalable approach to continually evolving our patterns with visual design, and establishing new components that can be leveraged by teams across the product org. 
  • Partner with the Brand and Creative team to coordinate on the role of color, typography, imagery, iconography, illustrations, etc in our product,  bringing a UX lens to adapting our brand system to the in-product experience, filling in gaps where necessary.
  • Build and maintain strong cross-functional stakeholder relationships to gain alignment around visual design strategy and workflow, ensuring your team’s efforts are coordinated with the overall product vision.
  • Make a case for the business impact of UI. Collaborating with PM, UXR and DS  to build test plans that measure the impact of UI changes to key product metrics.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in interaction design, graphic design, visual communication, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience as a visual UI/ UX designer or similar role, and 3 years experience as a creative manager with a proven track record of delivering high-quality designs.
  • Experience working in a consumer facing role inside a digital product organization
  • Experiencing designing best in class UI, motion experiences (including haptics & sound) across mobile and web
  • Experience designing UI / UX that is scalable, and accessible, supporting or contributing to a design pattern library or system 
  • Proficient in product design software such as Figma, Illustrator, Photoshop, After effects etc. 
  • Figma mastery: Leverage your strong knowledge of Figma to create and maintain design systems, collaborate with team members, and streamline the design workflow.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, and manage executive stakeholders. 
  • Strong attention to detail and a keen eye for aesthetics.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet deadlines, and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong portfolio of UI design that drove impact for the organization
  • Comfort with managing multiple projects of varying complexities at once, meet deadlines, work independently and well under pressure
  • Experience shaping the visual design direction of a robust digital platform

Compensation
Our job titles may span more than one career level. The starting base pay for this role is between $182,500 and $194,000. The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs, and location. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. This role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, and benefits.
