Product Design Manager - Design System and Foundational Services

Your Impact

We are rapidly building out everything Public Safety needs to receive, respond to, and handle any type of 911 call, address an incident on the scene and collect evidence, create a report of what happened, and build out a case for adjudication in court. We are doing this by a combination of hardware devices and sensors, software applications (desktop, mobile, in-car) with data storage and machine learning under the hood.

With being able to offer everything Public Safety needs end-to-end comes an opportunity to create seamless experiences that dramatically improve how Public Safety is operating today. This is what our Foundational Services team works on. An example of a dramatic improvement that's within reach to save lives is giving first responders the right information, at the right time, and in the right format, so that they can arrive on the scene faster and better prepared and ready to act. Another example is to effectively fight crime and protect the truth by using many different data sources to automatically build an incident summary that can accurately communicate to prosecutors, defenders and a jury what truly happen. Axon leads the way in transforming the industry from law enforcement to intervention and prevention: a more holistic model of public safety.

You will own Product Design strategy of how Axon products are used together to create seamless end-to-end experiences and which common experiences or components we should build next to get there. That includes defining and building targeted end-to-end experiences, thinking about common principles, patterns and components, and working with different product teams on realizing our end-to-end public safety vision.

What You’ll Do

Location: US / West coast
Reports to: VP or Product Design, UX Research and Technical Writing

• Lead Product Design strategy for common and connected components and experiences across Axon Products.
• Evolve the Axon Design System used across all products.
• Manage a small team of Sr. Product Designers
• Build alignment and articulate a vision through strong storytelling and presentations skills.
• Be key member of the Axon Product Design and UX Research leadership team working together with others leaders to evolve the discipline at the company.
• Pitch product design strategy ideas and execution to all levels of the company, including the executive team.
• Turn complex interactions involving a diverse set of users, a complex physical environment, social interactions, regional differences, and an ecosystem of hardware divides and software applications, into simple experience solutions.
• Participate in field research with domestic and overseas law enforcement agencies and help transform that research into practical, scalable solutions.
• Work closely with product management and engineering to shape the user experience and definition of our products
• Research industry and design trends, customer behavior, competition and current technologies to inform our Product strategy.
• Be an ambassador and champion for the Product Design & UX Research at Axon.

What you Bring

• 6+ years of product design experience with a minimum of 3 year leading major product design initiatives and 2 years working on design systems and common workflows across multiple products.
• A Bachelor’s degree in Interaction Design, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, HCI, or other related field. A Master’s degree is considered a plus.
• At least 2 years of people management experience.
• A proven track record of applying user-centered design processes and methodology to product definition, design, and development. You have extensive experience with every stage of the design process, including: sketches, wireframes, high fidelity mock-ups, prototyping, and usability testing.
• You enjoy collaborating on early product definition as much as you enjoy working with the larger product and engineering teams on implementation.
• You have experience with designing for multiple form factors (web, mobile, on-device) and modalities (touch, voice, keyboard/mouse).
• Strong conceptual skills and proven ability to rapidly prototype and design to communicate ideas to others.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain your ideas and decisions in a way that anyone can understand.
• Highly knowledgeable of the latest design tools and proficient at quickly learning new ones. We currently use Figma, but are always evaluating new tools.
• Able to function both independently and in a collaborative team environment.
• A great portfolio available for review.
