Product Design Director

mmhmm is a video communication company helping people instantly produce live and recorded video presentations that are entertaining to watch and easy to make. Founded in 2020, we believe being better at video is a crucial skill for any successful modern business. 

As a fully distributed, global team ourselves, we’re on a mission to empower people who work on video (that is, nearly everyone) to create more sustainable and joyful ways to work, teach, and collaborate. THE DESIGN TEAM

Product development at mmhmm is iterative, fast-paced, and design-led. Our designers are globally distributed and we bring our expertise and diverse experiences into everything that we do. We design delightful and thoughtful user experiences, care deeply about language and accessibility, and actively listen to and solve problems for the people who use our products. 

As Director of Product Design, you’ll support and champion our team of product designers. You’re passionate about managing and coaching, with a knack for identifying opportunities that can support individual career goals and the studio’s design needs. You know what your team needs to do their best work, when to step in and give guidance, and when to let a team member lead the way.

As a leader with strong opinions that are loosely held, you’re sought out for your strategic perspective on product design across multiple projects. You’ll work with engineering and product to understand project needs and resourcing, and define how cross-functional teams plan, prioritize, and sequence projects — because it’s not just about what gets made, but how and why. And if the team needs additional help, you’ll roll up your sleeves and contribute your design skills.

YOU'LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR:

• Helping build the team, from recruiting to onboarding new designers. You will ensure that everything from the interview process to getting up and running on the team is a great experience.
• Drive iterative improvements to our design process focused on quality.
• Improve communication channels between the design team, our partners in engineering and product, and the leadership team
• Drive the design vision for your projects and set clear goals for the team
• Ensure designers have the context and deep understanding they need to do effective and impactful work.
• Help measure overall team performance and health and ensure we maintain a good balance where everyone is challenged but not overwhelmed.

IDEALLY, YOU'LL HAVE:

• 8+  years of experience in product design
• 3+ years in people management 
• Experience working in Design-led organizations
• Experience working with early-stage startups.
• Experience working on teams that see projects from inception through to completion in a fast-paced environment, with a ruthless focus on quality and prioritization.
