Principal Product Designer (Remote, Europe)

Shopify's User Experience team is focused on enabling people to make commerce better at a global scale. With over 400 designers and content designers partnering closely with product managers, product researchers and developers working across the company, this team has a special role in building understanding and empathy for merchants. This is an opportunity to solve challenging problems that impact real people as they grow and maintain their businesses. In this role, you will work collaboratively and build iteratively with a multidisciplinary team of developers, product managers, content designers, user researchers, and marketers. You’ll deliver world class experiences that make potentially confusing business tasks intuitive and manageable, and empower entrepreneurs world-wide to achieve independence.

Responsibilities:

• Lead design projects of significant scope, complexity and responsibility in creative vision, strategy and execution, meaning limitless opportunities for you to turn your ideas into reality.

• Working with cross-functional teams (developers, product managers, researchers, content strategists, fellow designers) to drive design vision and strategy that meets the needs of our users. You will help other disciplines understand the value design can bring to a project and ultimately build and ship the best products. 

• Improve the merchant experience. You’ll work on projects from start to finish, while participating in various UX initiatives including design sprints to define and explore merchant problems, content mapping, sketching, wireframing, low and high fidelity prototyping, and leading stakeholder reviews. 

• Applying strategic thinking to visualize ideas and concepts and communicate them effectively and compellingly for internal stakeholders, partners and customers

• Being an active mentor for other designers, and helping to lead critiques, design reviews, and quarterly planning

• Contributing to our growing design system in an effort to cultivate a coherent look and feel across the entire Shopify platform

• Expert knowledge of the end to end iterative UX product design process, including how to develop and use personas, job stories, journey mapping, content modelling, wireframing and prototyping, user testing, and high fidelity visuals.

• Deep experience with driving and applying user-centered design processes while working with cross-functional teams including development, product management, and user research.

• A deep empathy for the user.

• Excellent communication and storytelling skills; you have the ability to help your team and stakeholders understand the “why” behind your design rationale.
