Carbon is a rapid-growth Silicon Valley-based additive manufacturing company that is revolutionizing how people design, engineer, make, and deliver products. By combining advancements in hardware, software, and materials science, Carbon is creating a new category of industrial 3D manufacturing.

What’s the job?
Carbon offers a wide-ranging suite of software to serve the needs of designers and printer users. Our Design and Simulation software helps engineers and product designers create in ways that aren’t possible with other tools, and our PrintOS software drives users’ success with the Carbon printing process (including tools to prepare parts for printing, dashboards to manage a fleet of machines, and physical interfaces to actually operate our machines). We need a great UX designer to help us develop new products, features, and workflows throughout these ecosystems – both improving on what exists and adding new functionality.

We’re seeking a designer with a strong sense of ownership, just the right blend of independence and team-centricity, and a combo of UX and UI chops. We expect this person to be able to partner with Product Management to understand customer needs and map out new workflows, and then turn around and create implementable designs, down to the pixels. This role is currently the only in-house designer for our software, and we expect this person to lead key projects while also delegating to and collaborating with our existing design contractors when necessary.

You might be right for this job if you…
… love user testing, obsess over button states for fun, and have never met a clunky workflow you didn’t think you could fix.
… have a point of view about “how things should be,” and aren’t afraid to present it.
… enjoy collaborating with software developers in a give-and-take, “wouldn’t it be cool if…” manner.
… are deeply curious (or already knowledgeable) about other ways that people design and manufacture products, and want to both honor users’ expectations and push the idea of what’s possible.
… are a pro at finding and using the right tool for the job, be it pencil and paper or an interactive mock-up.

This position reports to the managers of the Design/Simulation and PrintOS Product Management group.

Responsibilities
Work collaboratively with Product Managers and other key stakeholders to define new features from their earliest stages
Spend time with customers and users to understand their needs, fact-find, check assumptions, and gather feedback
Sketch workflows, craft prototypes, and make high-fidelity designs
Create and maintain detailed mock-ups for all in-development features
Collaborate and communicate with our existing design contractors (delegate projects; review work; ensure designs meet Carbon standards)
Get into the weeds with the Software Engineering team to ensure high-quality implementation of planned designs
Participate in regular stand-ups and planning sessions as an integral member of the development teams
Help standardize our design elements and systems

What else?
This role can be performed on-site at our Redwood City, CA office, or remotely within the US. If you’re remote, you should plan to travel to CA regularly for face-time with your team and our printers.

You do not need to match every listed expectation to apply for this position. Here at Carbon, we know that diverse perspectives foster the innovation we need to be successful, and we are committed to building a team that encompasses a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and skills.
