About CommandBar

CommandBar is a platform for helping software companies make their software easy and fast for all their users.

How many times have you been frustrated by software? Hunting for the right page that has the right button? Repeating the same sequence of 12 clicks tens of times per day? CommandBar makes any web app as easy to use as Google search, eliminating in-product friction and delighting users. We do this by enabling product teams to embed a searchable widget inside their app that lets users go from intent to action faster.

Today, CommandBar serves forward-thinking SaaS companies like ClickUp, LaunchDarkly, Shortcut, Gusto, OneSignal, and AngelList.

Despite our scale, we're a tiny team today that's just beginning to grow, which means tons of opportunities to do trajectory-altering work. If you're inspired to upgrade how humans use software, come join!

Lead product designer @ CommandBar

CommandBar lives and dies by the quality of our design. Our customers place our widget directly in front of their users, trusting us to give them a high-quality, delightful experience. As a senior designer at CommandBar, you'll be responsible for leading and coordinating design across our consumer and business experiences: the CommandBar widget itself, our Editor (which teams use to configure their CommandBar widget), and our dashboard.Your work will directly impact our customers, and also the hundreds of thousands of end users we serve every month.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinating design across our consumer and business experiences

  • Maintaining an uncompromising standard while accommodating new features and use cases

  • Conducting user research with both our customers and end users to identify problems and pressure test solutions

  • Working directly with engineers to help realize designs

  • Leading brainstorming sessions and producing wireframes at varying levels of fidelity

  • Helping define roadmap

  • Helping define our design and product cultures, including through hiring and mentorship

What will help you succeed

  • A strong portfolio of related work

  • Experience with tools for design visualization and iteration (including Figma)

  • Experience working with (and collaborating on) a design system

  • Experience with end user research and usability testing

  • 4+ years designing and shipping software, ideally at a startup

  • Desire to get (more) technical and learn more about how CommandBar works from an engineering POV

FAQs

Can I try out how CommandBar works?

Yes! We created a site for anyone to try out CommandBar: https://demo.commandbar.com. You can also try us out in one of our customers' products. For example, you can create a ClickUp or Shortcut account to see our widget in a real-software setting.

What are CommandBar's return-to-office plans?

We opened our San Francisco office in September, and have felt a surge of energy since. It's been so fun to collaborate on hard problems and share wins in person. We're also lucky to have a beautiful space with views of downtown San Francisco that we all find enhances our creativity and productivity.

As the COVID-19 situation develops, we'll remain COVID-cautious. The office is currently open to vaccinated team members. We monitor case rates and pandemic-related developments daily to ensure the office remains a safe place for everybody to work.

What's the interview process like?

Every interview starts the same way: two to three casual conversations with team members so (1) we can get to know you, your background, interests, and career goals and (2) you can learn about CommandBar. After those conversations take place, we'll agree on a written interview plan that's tailored to your role. Usually this begins with a domain-specific screen (e.g. a coding interview for an engineer, or a portfolio review for a designer) and might include a take-home component as well. It's very important to us that our interview process be transparent, as stress-free-as-possible, and gives you an accurate picture of what working at CommandBar is like.
