The Product & Design team is responsible for delivering Calm to our customers, ensuring that it is easy to use, supports their goals, and maintains a high level of quality across web, iOS, Android platforms. 

As a Lead Product Designer, you will play a key role in shaping and refining the user experience of our consumer app. You will collaborate closely with Product Management, Engineering, Data Science, and Marketing to craft intuitive, engaging and usually compelling user experiences that drive acquisition, engagement and retention. You will be a thought leader in design, helping to establish best practices and setting the bar for exceptional product design at Calm. 

We are hiring remote workers for this role in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, New York City, or Minneapolis, MN areas. At this time, only candidates in these locations will be considered.

What You’ll Do

  • Own and drive end-to-end product design initiatives, creating thoughtful and user-centered mobile experiences. 
  • Lead by example, articulating and presenting design concepts to cross functional stakeholders, including senior leadership. 
  • Champion system-level thinking and contribute to the evolution of Calm’s design system, ensuring scalability and efficiency.
  • Act as a tastemaker in visual design, brand integration, and motion design, ensuring that Calm maintains a polished and high-quality aesthetic.
  • Develop new processes and workflows with Product Management, User Research, and Engineering to drive innovation and efficiency.
  • Utilize qualitative and quantitative data to inform design decisions, continuously measuring the impact of your work.
  • Balance multiple projects in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high standards of execution.
  • Maintain a strong attention to detail during engineering implementation, ensuring high-quality execution through collaboration with development and QA teams.

Who You Are

  • A seasoned designer with 5+ years of experience in UX and UI design for consumer mobile apps
  • Proficient in modern design tools such as Figma, Zeplin, and Principle.
  • A strong advocate for accessibility, consistency, and high-quality user experiences.
  • A collaborative partner, experienced in working closely with Product Managers, Researchers, and Engineers to ship effective product solutions.
  • Comfortable presenting and articulating design rationale to cross-functional teams and senior leadership.
  • Able to incorporate both qualitative and quantitative research insights into your design process.
  • Ideally, have experience with motion design, prototyping, and visual storytelling to create engaging user experiences.
  • Experience working within or contributing to a design system.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working at multiple organizations, ideally including time at an agency or a fast-paced startup environment.
  • Exposure to motion design, brand integration, and prototyping tools.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating your ability to design beautiful, functional, and user-friendly experiences.
  • A passion for Calm’s mission and an understanding of how digital products can enhance wellness and mental health.

Minimum Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in UX/UI design for consumer mobile apps.
  • Strong foundation in interaction design, visual design, and usability best practices.
  • Experience designing and shipping mobile applications at scale.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to a larger design vision and strategy.

Calm uses a geographic pay model that determines salaries based on the location where an employee lives. For this position, the base pay ranges across Calm’s pay tiers is as follows: $160,000 - $245,000. The base pay range represents the low and high end of Calm’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, experience and other qualifications. Calm uses employee zip code to determine which pay range applies. This role is also eligible for equity + comprehensive benefits + 401k + flexible time off.
