Head of Product Design / Remote / Product / Full-Time
TL;DR: Hypergrowth early-stage startup seeking Head of Design. You will help us empower the most ambitious people in the world to build the future.
About On Deck
On Deck has become the place top talent and ambitious builders go to accelerate their ideas and careers, empowered by a world-class community of their peers.

A little bit about the Product Design team:

  • The product design team is currently made up of two experienced and senior designers
  • They own the entire design process, from problem exploration to final implementation
  • They work in small project teams (product/design/eng) at the moment and will shift toward product teams as the team scales
  • Oh, and they're a friendly bunch who are excited to work with someone who loves to lead teams and drive products forward
  • We expect the design team to double over a ~6 month period, you will play a key role in scaling the team and its processes

What you will do:

  • As the Head of Design at On Deck you will focus on a few key areas:
  • Lead a talented team of product designers – you love working with designers and helping them to grow and develop in their careers as well as guiding them towards high-quality design outcomes
  • Build a world-class product design org – you'll be focused on hiring, process improvements, design ops, user research, etc
  • Nurture a healthy and happy team culture – you'll create an environment of trust, support, and innovation
  • Steer the ship – you'll work closely with product and eng leadership on product strategy and vision
  • Roll up your sleeves and work alongside the team – initially, you'll also be helping us to ship product as you help us to build out the team
  • Collaborate on our rebrand with our creative director and our agency Koto, and work with the product design team to execute it across our product surfaces

This role will be a great fit if you:

  • Are interested in the future of the startup ecosystem – a remote-first way for talented people from all over the world to build relationships, companies, and careers together
  • Are excited about joining an early-stage startup and a rapidly growing company
  • Are excited about leading and growing a team of senior designers
  • Want to have a direct influence on product strategy and product direction

This role might not be for you if you:

  • Want to manage a team but don't want to do any hands-on design work
  • Want to move into design management/leadership but have no previous experience in a leading/managing role
  • Want to work in a company that has a predictable roadmap, meticulous planning, and everything has been scoped in detail by a PM, etc

What's in it for you?

  • Supercharge your career by joining us at this unique stage of growth
  • Spend your days working with a team of fantastic product designers
  • Play a key role in scaling our design and product Orgs.
  • Work with and learn from world-class engineers, product people, and company builders — our team consistently rates each other as "the smartest people we've worked with"
  • Shape the future of On Deck's product surfaces — you will play a crucial role working alongside product and engineering leadership to steer the ship
This role comes with a competitive salary, stock options, you can take any PTO you need, anytime you need, and employee benefits including generous healthcare.
Our team works remotely and we are excited about candidates globally. Please note that most of our product engineering team works between GMT-8 and GMT+3. We work fairly asynchronously but candidates from these regions will be preferred.
Why you might be excited about us:
We’re tackling a big problem with even bigger potential. We plan to build a modern educational institution for the next 100 years.
Customers LOVE us. Nearly one in three of our all-time customers (~700 people) have added On Deck to their Twitter bios and/or Linkedin — choosing to align their core professional identity with their participation in an On Deck program. They describe On Deck using superlatives like "life-changing," "the best decision I ever made," "It's too good to be true, but it's true," and more.
You’ll be able to work remotely and (mostly) set your own schedule. On Deck was a remote-first team even before COVID, so we know what makes for a great remote environment.
You'll have a lot of flexibility in your role, and will be able to help define what your role and our product-engineering teams look like going forward.
We're backed by over 200 world-class investors, operators, and executives, including a $20 million Series A led by Keith Rabois at Founders Fund with participation from Village Global, Balaji Srinivasan, Bloomberg Beta, and so many more. (Read more about our fundraise and 50-year vision here.)
Additional details are below:
Please note this role is only open to candidates that are legally authorized to work where they reside. Due to the remote nature of the role, On Deck does not currently sponsor candidates for visas or work authorizations/permits and does not currently support the transfer of visas or work authorizations/permits from prior employers to On Deck.
If you were to join On Deck, we'd want you to love it. We also know that it can be hard to tell from the outside looking in whether that would be the case for you. So, we challenged ourselves to develop an honest set of reasons someone wouldn't want to join our company. We hope it helps you make an informed decision about whether On Deck is a place you'd love to work. In summary, On Deck may not be the place for you if:
• Another company's mission gets you way more fired up.
• You want a 9-5 job.
• You do your best work in highly-structured, steady-paced, and meticulously-planned environments.
• You like finding and poking holes more than you like filling them.
• You see differences as divisions
You believe that something has to be exclusive for it to be cool
You can read the details of why On Deck may not be the company for you on our Non-Values page.
