Job Description

What’s the role?
We are looking for Group Product Manager to lead the Knowledge Base Team to focus on using taxonomy, ontology, and machine learning to describe Etsy’s inventory and buyers. As the Group Product Manager  you will be responsible for leading the strategy for our Knowledge Base teams to provide highly accurate structured data about our business entities (listings, buyers, queries, shops, collections) to internal teams in order to help power engaging, personalized shopping experiences.. You’ll work closely with engineers, designers, data scientists, taxonomists and ontologists to define and realize the product roadmap. Do you find joy in solving extremely complex problems, such as how to define the entities within a completely unique and handmade marketplace? If so, this could be the perfect match?

This is a full-time position reporting to the Director of Product and the base salary range will be 194,000 - 252,000 USD per year. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy. For this role, we are considering candidates based in the US who are either remote, flex, or office-based. Etsy offers different work modes to meet the variety of needs and preferences of our team. Learn more about our Flex and Office-based work modes and workplace safety policies here.

What’s this team like at Etsy?

  • As a two sided marketplace, understanding the quality of our structured data can be difficult. We are working to build inferences that fill the gap between what our sellers tell us about our inventory and what data we need to unlock personalized high impact customer experiences.
  • The Knowledge Base team is passionate about and dedicated to building an in-depth understanding of the unique world of Etsy. Our goal is to build, collect, and model product metadata to make sense of millions of unique items and users, enabling Etsy’s teams to craft relevant experiences. We are responsible for the end-to-end process of describing, collecting, enhancing and serving product and user structured data to our internal partner teams.
  • Data structure to capture and collect information at scale from our sellers
  • ML capabilities to infer new labels and relationships and increase coverage and quality of our data
  • Storing and serving that data in a performant and accessible way

What does the day-to-day look like?

  • Own the product strategy for Knowledge base, working with a cross-functional team of engineers, machine learning data scientists, designers, ontologist/taxonomists and analysts.
  • Build and maintain a roadmap of high-impact, customer-centric projects, all aimed at improving the quality and coverage of our data and meeting our partner’s needs.
  • Communicate plans and progress to executives and senior management.
  • Inform product decisions with quantitative and qualitative data on user behavior and experimentation (e.g. a/b testing, survey data, usability studies).
  • Build relationships and work with partners within the Product and Marketing teams and across other teams at Etsy.
  • Define methods and metrics for identifying success and failure while ensuring the team is clear on their objectives.
  • Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law.

Qualifications

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

  • 4+ years of product management / product ownership experience, with an emphasis on growth.
  • 2+ years of experience managing product managers or other team members.
  • Strong technical abilities, with data science or machine learning experience.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • Exceptional organizational and analytical abilities.
  • Strong user experience sensibilities and familiarity with platform UI best practices.
  • Strong use of analytics, user research, and business cases to drive decisions and improve products.
  • Proven ability to operate under tight deadlines while maintaining multiple projects.
  • Experience working in a two-sided marketplace and/or ecommerce is a plus.
