Job Description

The Foundational Engineering (Fe) Head of Product role leads the Product organization responsible for stakeholder management, defining and managing success metrics, OKRs, and roadmap definition and delivery across all Fe products at Block.  Foundational Engineering consists of Block’s Information Security, Corporate Engineering, Data and ML Platform, Cloud & Developer Platform, Connectivity and Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) teams.

The responsibilities of the role are:

  • Stakeholder management across the GMs and Product Managers across all Block BUs (Square, Cash App, Tidal, TBD, Spiral) and Foundational teams to understand how they are using Fe services, gather feedback on future feature requests or service improvements, and incorporate that feedback into transparently published roadmaps
  • Establish common practices across Fe teams for allocating engineering capacity to product roadmaps, managing roadmaps on a regular cadence (e.g. backlog grooming), and reporting metrics on engineering & roadmap delivery and velocity (e.g. consistent metric for cycle time).
  • Partner with the Fe Head of OPS (Operations, Program & Strategy) and Fe Engineering leaders to develop and update a narrative document for each Product team in Fe on a quarterly basis
  • Define, nurture and expand the Product discipline, craft and culture within Fe, including career paths for the org from senior Product leaders to junior Product managers
  • Partner with the CISO, Chief Privacy Office and Head of Fe GRC (Governance, Risk & Compliance) to ensure privacy, regulatory, and security requirements are incorporated into all Fe roadmaps
  • Work closely with Fe F&S (Finance & Strategy) partners and the Head of Fe OPS to quantify and track the financial benefit of the Fe roadmap 

We are looking for a leader to scale our Product Management practices and enable teams throughout Block’s ecosystem to ship products that are remarkable, secure and compliant.

You will:

  • Develop, maintain, and enhance Fe’s Product function and strategy through vision setting, planning and effective stakeholder & roadmap management
  • Lead, grow, and expand a team of accomplished product management professionals while encouraging an environment of learning and growth mindset
  • Collaborate with other senior leaders on partner teams to engage with and contribute to the wider Product community at Block 
  • Lead analysis of the sequencing, dependencies, and capacity requirements for roadmap delivery across all Fe products
  • Transparently publish Fe roadmaps and associated metrics (e.g. CSAT, cycle time) with the wider Block leadership team on a quarterly cadence
  • Work on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth knowledge of the industry as well as our business and department objectives & requirements
  • Participate on corporate development projects to provide guidance on M&A activities

Qualifications

  • 15+ years of demonstrated success leading Product teams delivering secure, business critical software, data and cloud solutions in a highly regulated environment.
  • Broad knowledge of industry-standard Product management practices and success leading organizations through an Agile transition, or successful use of Agile practices to regularly ship remarkable products with increasing velocity 
  • Ability to influence executive leadership, and to communicate comfortably and concisely to audiences at every level and in every role within the company
  • Established strength in leading teams, including growing the careers of individual product managers, senior product leaders, and junior people just entering the field

Additional Information

Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. U.S. locations are categorized into one of four zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Zone A: USD $326,300 - USD $398,800
Zone B: USD $326,300 - USD $398,800
Zone C: USD $326,300 - USD $398,800
Zone D: USD $326,300 - USD $398,800
