How you'll make an impact

As a Senior Product Manager within the Global Tax team, you will be responsible for driving the vision and strategy of a group of product teams that creates effortless tax experiences globally. 

You will ensure all of the teams are crystal clear about our mission and why their work matters. You’ll work with the teams to set OKRs that really matter, so that everyone knows what success means and how we’re measuring progress towards this. You’ll also be responsible for communicating the purpose and importance of our products to senior stakeholders and giving these stakeholders  transparency of the goals, plans and progress of the product teams you support. 

You’ll grow a team of world class product leaders by mentoring and coaching the product managers and product owners who report to you, and by helping them identify and escalate risks to ensure their teams are getting all the support they need from you and the organization. 

What you'll do

  • You’ll lead multiple teams building software products that enable Xero’s accounting partners around the world to deliver effortless tax experiences to their small business clients. 
  • Understanding customer problems, you will be the champion of the ‘what’ and the ‘why’ and deliver value through defining, driving and executing a product roadmap that realizes Xero’s vision and objectives and ensures the success of the product. 
  • Bridge technical and business worlds as you lead strong and productive relationships with global business stakeholders to understand and deliver on market needs and priorities, and evangelize the product vision. 
  • Work with strategy, product marketing, data and research teams and drive user and competitive research to uncover customer needs and new product value propositions in line with Xero’s vision. 
  • Work closely with your peers in the product group leadership team: architects, engineering leaders and design managers to deliver quality software that solves real customer problems.

Success looks like

  • You and your team are identifying and solving critical problems for Xero’s compliance product teams around the world, who love and depend on the platform capabilities you provide to enable them to get better products to market faster.
  • You have a clear understanding of Xero’s strategic priorities and how your portfolio of products and services align to it. You have articulated a compelling product vision that your team of Product Managers and Owners pursue with missionary zeal. They know what’s important, how they are contributing, and why what they’re doing matters. 
  • The teams you support and stakeholders across the business clearly understand why the problems your teams are working on are important, how we plan to solve those problems and how we’re tracking
  • You have coached your direct reports in modern product discovery practices — enabling them and their engineering pods to understand and use many experimental techniques. You continually improve on and champion modern product discovery practices inside and outside of your team.
  • You and your direct reports actively seek out metrics to validate a hypothesis and measure results. Your portfolio is thriving because you and your Product Owners make good investments based on evidence.
  • You, your direct reports and their engineering pods obsess over customers: You all engage directly with them and get product ideas from observing customer struggles, and analyzing customer data. 
  • You have built healthy relationships with your stakeholders. All stakeholders are updated appropriately on product vision, strategy, releases and roadmaps. Key partnerships are established as necessary to enable the success of products and services within your portfolio.
  • The boundaries of your portfolio (what your direct reports own and what they don’t) are articulated and understood inside and outside of the portfolio.
  • You have a compelling portfolio of products and services that your customers love to use.
  • Your direct reports are effectively supported. Their performance is reviewed regularly and feedback is continually provided in a timely manner. Good performance is recognized and celebrated. Poor performance is managed promptly. There is opportunity for them to grow at Xero. They understand their personal career path and are encouraged to excel towards it.
  • Your direct reports and their engineering pods are empowered to make decisions when fast, decentralized decision-making is appropriate to reduce delays, make improvements, enable faster feedback and more innovative solutions.

  • Experience:
  • Proven Product Management experience — with an extensive toolbox of modern product discovery practices to draw upon.
  • Previous experience in managing others and supporting their development and growth goals
  • A deep understanding of what is important to product teams and developers and how your teams can help enable that
  • Proven experience championing strategic priorities and helping others relate to and align with these. Proven experience setting product vision and strategy.
  • A solid track record of addressing customer needs through innovative use of technology
  • Proven ability to influence outcomes at all levels in a variety of contexts
  • Proven experience using a range of metrics to monitor the success and health of products and services. Proven experience of making evidence-based decisions.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills. Proven experience building meaningful, collaborative relationships across all levels of the business.
  • Proven experience leading and building high-performing product teams, fostering an open and collaborative environment.
