About Customer.io

Over 7,500 companies — from scrappy startups to global brands — use our platform to send billions of emails, push notifications, in-app messages, and SMS every day. Customer.io powers automated communication that people actually want to receive. We help teams send smarter, more relevant messages using real-time behavioral data.

About the Role

We’re looking for a Senior Product Designer to join our growing design organization.

This is a high-impact role for an experienced designer who thrives at the intersection of craft, systems thinking, and mentorship. You’ll shape experiences that span multiple teams and customer journeys, using data and modern tools (including AI-enhanced prototyping) to move from insight to execution quickly.

You’ll elevate Customer.io’s visual craft, evolve our Pluma design system, and help grow the next generation of designers on our team. You’ll work side-by-side with engineers, PMs, and peers to create elegant, cohesive experiences that drive measurable improvements in usability, retention, and customer satisfaction.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead cross-squad initiatives shaping key customer journeys from early concept through shipped experience.
  • Able to contribute small front-end changes directly to the UI to support rapid iteration and collaboration with engineering.
  • Explore multiple solutions to complex UX challenges, validating assumptions through rapid experimentation and AI-assisted workflows.
  • Elevate the visual language and interaction design of our platform to ensure consistency, accessibility, and delight.
  • Mentor peers and contribute to team growth through critiques, async feedback, and documentation.
  • Leverage AI tools (like Figma AI or Lovable) to accelerate prototyping, summarize insights, and improve iteration cycles.
  • Evolve our Pluma design system with reusable components and scalable patterns that anticipate future needs.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering to deliver high-quality, performant, and maintainable designs.
  • Synthesize research and behavioral data to uncover pain points and identify opportunities across the customer lifecycle.
  • Measure impact by defining and tracking design success metrics tied to usability, engagement, and retention.

What We’re Looking For

  • 7+ years of professional experience designing digital products (SaaS or complex web applications preferred).
  • Proven ability to lead multi-team design initiatives that drive measurable outcomes.
  • Deep visual and interaction design expertise—a strong eye for layout, hierarchy, motion, and accessibility.
  • Systems thinker with experience building or scaling design systems.
  • Fluency with front-end principles and an understanding of technical constraints.
  • Comfort with AI-enhanced tools and modern prototyping workflows.
  • Excellent async communication skills—clear documentation, strong storytelling, and a bias for clarity and action.
  • A track record of mentorship, collaboration, and influence within design teams.

Nice to Have

  • Experience contributing to or maintaining a design system at scale.
  • Familiarity with motion design, micro-interactions, or 3D/visual storytelling.
  • Background in data visualization or designing for analytics-heavy experiences.
  • Experience collaborating in remote, async-first environments.
  • Interest in how AI and automation can improve creative and operational workflows.
