About the Messaging Team
The Messaging Team’s mission is to make sure we deliver the right message, through the right channel, at the right time. We do this across the entire customer lifecycle, and in service of a range of user and business objectives: everything from connecting you to the latest season of your favorite show and reminding you that a comedy special is going live in an hour to helping you more easily sign up for a new account or recover your password. We leverage a variety of communication channels (push notifications, email, SMS, in-app) to talk to users of our product, both on and off the service. The scale of this is significant: we send billions of messages a month to hundreds of millions of users.

As a product management team, we are responsible for (1) steadily evolving the capabilities of our messaging channels, (2) guiding our internal stakeholders on how to most effectively leverage our messaging capabilities for different objectives and (3) ensuring a positive holistic customer experience, across the entire portfolio of messaging experiences.

Messaging Enablement
We are moving from a centralized messaging approach to a more federated self-serve model. This will require us to think differently about how we operate our messaging platform, and how we enable internal stakeholders to interact with and leverage our messaging capabilities. We are looking for a product manager to own this enablement strategy.

Location
This role is based in either our Los Gatos or Los Angeles office in a hybrid model, but we are open to remote candidates who are on the West Coast. Some travel to each of these offices will be required several times a quarter.

What will you do in this role?

  • The Messaging Enablement PM will be an integral part of the Messaging PM team, and will partner closely with the PMs who are responsible for our consumer-facing experiences. Your responsibilities will include:
  • Building a deep understanding of current and future internal stakeholder needs.
  • Owning the strategy for how to enable all internal stakeholders to leverage messaging capabilities.
  • Defining and driving the roadmap for internal tooling across the full lifecycle of message creation and management.
  • Leading a cross-functional team of stunning colleagues across design, engineering, and data science.
  • Determining how / where to set opinionated guardrails in our tooling.
  • Identifying opportunities for the highest leverage across all stakeholders.
  • Collaborating across engineering teams and internal stakeholders to make build vs buy recommendations for relevant parts of our tooling.
  • Partnering with other tooling and enablement teams across Netflix to identify and leverage common building blocks.
  • Determining if and how to integrate messaging capabilities into other internal applications as needed.

Skills and Experience

  • Here’s our wish list of skills and experiences we would like you to have. Remember, no one gets everything on their wish list! If you have some, but not all of these, we want to hear more about how you’d apply your existing skills towards growing into some of these areas you may not already have.
  • Communication - clear and direct written and verbal communication is a must for any leader at Netflix, especially for Product Managers. A leader on this team will be able to take technical concepts and reframe them so that different audiences can understand them.
  • Curiosity, judgment and humility - guiding our enablement strategy will benefit from an analytical mindset, strong systems thinking and ultimately good judgment. Our culture calls on us to “make wise decisions despite ambiguity”. And when you inevitably make mistakes, you learn from them and share them with others so that we can all learn.
  • Tools and enablement experience - an effective PM in this role will be able to drive the overall messaging enablement strategy to meet internal demand as well as build for the right end-user experience. You should have experience building and maintaining tools for internal users that have a consumer objective.
  • Technical background or strong understanding of technical systems & platforms and the ability to communicate with and challenge both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience working on consumer products - the tools we aim to provide will be used by a diverse group of functions to manage a very large scale of consumer messaging. The ability to empathize with these functions and anticipate their needs is important for success in this role.
  • Messaging experience - if you have a specific background building out tools for messaging or working in the consumer messaging domain, it would provide an easier ramp-up into this space. Enterprise messaging experience would also be helpful.
  • Culture builder - this is a new space for our team, and as a leader, you can shape a positive culture for the cross-functional team: an inclusive environment that engages in productive debate, rewards curiosity in understanding the business problems we’re trying to solve, and reinforces accountability to outcomes.
