The Company You’ll Join

At Carta we create owners and make private markets liquid.

We live in a world where some people live on the equity stack and enjoy exponential wealth growth and preferential tax treatment; others live on the debt stack and may work their entire lives for a company and retire only with the cash they’ve managed to save from their paychecks. Our contribution to solving the wealth inequality problem is moving people from the debt stack (payroll) to the equity stack. By making it as easy to issue equity to employees as it is to put them on payroll, we can create more owners.

At Carta, we are helpful, transparent, fair, and kind. We are relentless executors, unconventional thinkers, and masters of our craft.

The Team You’ll Work With

This role is on the fund admin team within Investor Services. We solve for our internal fund administration team and CFOs/fund managers. We build the general ledger, nitty gritty accounting logic and are stewards of data quality for our clients. We are the tip of the spear for the future of fund admin.

We are a team that moves quickly and values execution above all else. We pride ourselves on developing deep domain expertise so we understand complex accounting systems and bridge the gap between where we are today and what the future could be. We are thoughtful, hold the bar high for what good looks like, and are our own most stringent critic of the outcomes we produce.

The Problems You’ll Solve

Our fund administration business has grown at an unprecedented rate since we entered the market in mid 2018. To power this growth, we’ve built a world class accounting team, our own general ledger, and a framework we call event-based accounting. We set our sights on building the back-office of the future for Silicon Valley and have been delivering.

In 2021 however, Silicon Valley has turned its eyes to crypto investing in a big way. Top tier firms are raising large crypto-focused funds, institutional investors are pouring capital into Bitcoin, and VC twitter is buzzing with talk of the latest NFTs. To serve the venture firm of tomorrow, it might be table stakes to help them navigate the crypto space.

So, we’re building a new team within our fund administration group focused on crypto. This team will be on the frontlines with our bleeding edge crypto clients developing industry leading expertise, expanding our TAM, and serving as Carta’s bellwether for where this asset class is headed. We want to be Silicon Valley’s crypto administrator and guide into this market. We need your help to do it.

This team will also be charged with making sure our investments in crypto administration help pave the way for serving other asset classes and international. Funds that purchase assets in crypto or in non-native currencies have similar FX-like problems. Accounting for NFTs might look a lot like accounting for rare art. Staking rewards might look a lot like debt interest income. Done correctly with systems thinking, the work of our crypto team will have impacts far beyond their primary clients.

Some of the problems you’ll help us solve:

  1. How do we enable funds to conduct high-volume crypto transactions?
  2. How do we serve a fund denominated in BTC investing in other currencies?
  3. How do we support real-time pricing of crypto, public stocks, FX?
  4. How does increased liquidity change how funds are formed? Is the future all open ended?

The Impact You’ll Have

If successful, you will have created a delightful experience for crypto funds on Carta. It will feel like Carta was built to natively handle these assets and not like an afterthought that was shoehorned in. And through this process, you will have elevated Carta to becoming Silicon Valley’s leading crypto fund administrator opening up significant new TAM.

You will also have made it easier for the market to access crypto investments. Any fund considering a crypto strategy will have experts at Carta they can talk to for advice on anything from compliance, custody, valuing NFTs, crypto friendly tax teams and more. You will have helped the market figure out standards for crypto with an active say in shaping it.

You will be a key input for Carta’s overall approach to crypto. Is company ownership meaningfully moving to tokens in some sector? What you see on the frontlines will be valuable information used across the company to decide where to make additional investments once we know which way the wind is blowing on crypto.

This is a strategic role within a large business unit at Carta. Your potential for impact cannot be understated.

About You

You’re a problem solver who gets into the details. You know how to figure things out and ship good product where others spiral. You’re naturally curious and obsessive about learning. You care about doing the right thing as much as you do winning.

Preferred:

  • You already work in or have a deep understanding of crypto.
  • You not only know how the different assets and instruments work but stay read up on the newest developments in the space.
  • You balance the optimism of what could go right with pragmatism. If you were talking to a crypto bull, you might come off as a bear. If talking to a bear, you might come off as a bull.
We are an equal opportunity employer and are committed to providing a positive interview experience for every candidate.
