The Personalization team makes deciding what to play next easier and more enjoyable for every listener. From Daily Mix to Discover Weekly, we’re behind some of Spotify’s most-loved features. We built them by understanding the world of music and podcasts better than anyone else. Join us and you’ll keep millions of users listening by making great recommendations to each and every one of them. We ask that our team members be physically located in Central European time or Eastern Standard/Daylight time zones for the purposes of our collaboration hours.

We are looking for a human-centric design manager to drive the design vision and strategy for our Mixer product area. Mixer’s goal is to ensure listening sessions drive multidisciplinary value for our listeners and creators on the platform. In this role, you’ll lead a small team of product designers and you’ll inspire the product area at large to deliver an outstanding recommendation experience. This is a strategically important role for Spotify and the opportunity for impact is high regarding the happiness of our users and success of our business.

What you'll do

  • Directly manage a small team of designers, supporting them as they drive their personal and professional growth. The overall team is ~3 designers.
  • Partner with Product, Tech, and Insights leads to collectively set the mission, vision and strategy for a group of ~65 people. You will help inspire this group to be healthy, and high performing.
  • Lead projects across the entire product lifecycle — from concept to MVP to rollout and beyond. You set the vision for the content experience and build space for others to collaborate.
  • Bring user-centric thinking to technically complex problems. We craft user outcomes that are powered by machine learning models. It’s important to not to lose sight of the needs of the listener and the creator.
  • Challenge status quo on creativity and quality of design work across the team.
  • Promote your team’s work to drive alignment across the other teams.
  • Proactively look for and solve high-level issues and opportunities.

Who you are

  • You have 3+ years of people management experience with designers in a fast-paced product development environment.
  • You have experience hiring and developing inclusive teams.
  • You are a leader with practical design chops you don’t mind dusting off from time to time. You’ve shipped many consumer products over the years, and understand what it takes to build meaningful customer-first product experiences.
  • You have a keen eye for detail and can give effective direction and direct feedback to designers on the team — we appreciate radical candor!
  • You’re a phenomenal communicator, both written and verbal. You have the communication skills to help set up frameworks and brainstorm initial design concepts. You also have the ability to mentor others to deliver work, and make strategy come to life.
  • You tackle opportunities that are ambiguous and vague. You do this by understanding the people involved in the project, what the project needs, and using everyone’s strengths to achieve the project’s goals.
  • You have an online portfolio or PDF that you can share with us. A link to your online portfolio, or a PDF, is required. Applications without a portfolio are unlikely to be considered.

Where you'll be

  • Where in the world? For this role, it can be in Boston or New York, with frequent collaboration with teams in Stockholm, London, and other European and US locations.
  • Working hours? We operate within the Eastern US time zone for collaboration and ask that all be located in that time zone.
  • Prefer an office to work from home instead? Not a problem! We have plenty of options for your working preferences. Find more information about our Work From Anywhere options here.
