The Role:
Backstage is seeking a Director of Product Marketing to position Backstage’s marketplace and tools to a variety of different customer segments and help drive growth across both sides of the platform. As Director of Product Marketing, you’ll be building out the Product Marketing function and will be helping to create a new operating system to power the future of content creation. Our current team consists of 13 creative marketers specializing in growth, demand gen, email, design, and conversion rate optimization, including a dedicated content marketing resource who will support product marketing. We value innovation, experimentation, and data-supported decisions in a supportive, democratic, open, and respectful environment. 

In this senior leadership position, you will leverage a deep understanding of our customers to create go-to-market strategy for our brand as we continue our expansion into global markets, new verticals focused on crew and below-the-line freelancers, and features such as The Backstage Network. You must be able to envision the unique and complex intersection of these distinct audiences, and develop positioning to reach each segment and drive platform adoption and subscriber growth. As we are a lean team in a scaling organization, you must covet the opportunity to be a hands’ on contributor in a senior leadership role. 

The Director of Product Marketing will report to Backstage’s Chief Marketing Officer.

What you'll do:

  • Build and manage a well-defined GTM, positioning, and communication strategy for each unique customer segment across their user journey
  • Develop and manage product marketing content roadmap, including articles, videos, white papers, and case studies
  • Conduct extensive primary and secondary research through competitive landscaping, customer interviews, surveys, and other methodology to understand and meet specific user and localization challenges; use discoveries to drive penetration of product in new markets
  • Oversee creation of sales enablement content and training through deep understanding of customer needs, wants, and pain pointsLead extension of Backstage brand into new verticals, such as post-production and influencers; work closely with Growth team to increase awareness of evolving brand and product offerings
  • Partner with product, content, sales development and customer success teams to understand user needs and ensure consistent, effective, targeted communication with customers
  • Work closely with product and creative teams to strategize a cohesive and scalable platform that unifies our different audiences and clearly addresses their unique needs
  • Grow product marketing function; hire and manage product and content marketers, and foster a positive environment that encourages collaboration, upholds commitment to process, and provides professional development and mentorship
  • Leverage analytics tools (we use Amplitude, Looker, Google Analytics, and others) to measure and report customer engagement and adoption

What we're looking for from you:

  • Strong track record of creating positioning and messaging for an accomplished high velocity B2B SaaS tech or Two-Sided Marketplace that drove customer growth (bonus points for a Marketing Technology Advertising background or experience in building a SaaS for the creator ecosystem)
  • Deep experience with customer segmentation and strategizing effective communication and positioning for each unique segment
  • Experience using demand generation, messaging, and content marketing to drive user acquisition and platform adoption
  • True interest in understanding the customer; you enjoy the deep dive process into their needs, and translating that research into actionable communication strategies
  • Proven ability to solve complex, unstructured challenges 
  • Exceptional analytical skills, i.e. the ability to assemble and interpret data, create executive summaries and deliver actionable business insights 
  • Experience building, hiring, managing, mentoring, and leveling up a remote team
  • Adept at using qualitative and quantitative research methods and methodologies, including market landscaping and competitor analysis, to support product marketing decisions
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills that can be tailored to suit a variety of individual personalities and levels of seniority
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, including driving consensus and alignment
