About Stack Overflow

Stack Overflow empowers the world to develop technology through collective knowledge. More than 100 million people visit Stack Overflow every month, making it one of the most-visited websites in the world.

Best known for its public platform, Stack Overflow helps people find the answers they need, when they need them. That includes serving up relevant technologies to the community through Stack Overflow Advertising, providing direct access to technology-specific subject matter experts with Collectives™, sharing more about companies as future employers, and helping teams scale with its market-leading knowledge sharing and collaboration platform, Stack Overflow for Teams.

At Stack Overflow, our mission is to serve developers by building products that make millions of developers’ lives better every day. As a designer at Stack Overflow, you’ll create and build products that directly impact the work and the lives of those developers.

We’re looking for a Senior Product Designer to join our team which focuses on building tools for developers, companies, and the community to support their growth and development. We are looking for someone to lead building and growing our design system, Stacks. Our system enables designers and developers to quickly design, build, and maintain high quality, consistent user experiences across our sites. This person should be a self sufficient systems thinker and highly motivated. We are looking for an individual to own the design system—someone who can build relationships across the company to understand the needs of teams and users, can build a roadmap, manage timelines, and set expectations. For the foreseeable future, this person will spend roughly 75% of their time building and 25% of their time owning the design system project and its direction.

This person will be reporting into a design team, but working closely with a team of engineers dedicated to building and maintaining our design system. They’ll also be spending time with all our other product designers, whether that’s helping them contribute to our design system, participating in critique, or just hanging out with us in Slack. We’re a team that rejects competition between designers and instead embraces collaboration and is always looking for ways to teach and help each other.

  • Scope work with an understanding of the time and effort involved then allocate said work between yourself and Stacks engineers.

  • Partner with user researchers to gather consumer data, validate concepts, test prototypes & apply findings into you designs
  • Solicit, synthesize, and incorporate feedback from brand, design, and engineers
